Cattle are a known reservoir of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. The prevalence and stability of Shiga toxin and/or Shiga toxin genes among native wild ungulates in Idaho were investigated. The frequency of both Shiga genes and toxin was similar to that reported for Idaho cattle ( approximately 19%).
Background: The survival of pathogens in biofilms poses a threat to food safety. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular characterization of Escherichia coli strains. Methods: Swab samples (n=144) were collected from biofilm formed on food contact surfaces in seafood pre-processing plant in India. E. coli was isolated and identified using uid ...
T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency are considered important etiologies of Kashin–Beck disease (KBD), although the exact mechanism is still unclear. To identify differentially expressed microRNAs (DE-miRNAs) in articular cartilage rats exposed to selenomethionine (SeMet) supplementation, thirty-six 4-week-old Sprague Dawley were divided into a control group (gavaged with 4% anhydrous ethanol), 10...
The genes for a new enterotoxin were cloned from Escherichia coli SA53. The new toxin was heat labile and activated adenylate cyclase but was not neutralized by antisera against cholera toxin or E. coli heat-labile enterotoxin. Subcloning and minicell experiments indicated that the toxin is composed of two polypeptide subunits that are encoded by two genes. The two toxin subunits exhibited mobi...
To study comprehensive toxin profiles and the chromosomal diversity of current Japanese hospital-associated meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (HA-MRSA) strains, we conducted PCR-based identification of 28 toxin genes, and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing and PFGE analysis of 208 MRSA strains isolated from 100 hospitals throughout Japan. Of the tested HA-MRSA strai...
The present study was aimed to identify the frequency of coagulase (Coa) and thermonuclease (Nuc) genes and Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (Sea) production among Staphylococcus aureus isolated from various sources in Shiraz. Moreover, the correlation between the Sea gene and coagulase and thermonuclease enzymes is also considered. A total of 100 S. aureus were isolated from various sources includ...
Introduction: Toxigenic Clostridium difficile is the major cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, colitis, and pseudomembranous colitis. The pathogenicity of C. difficile is related to toxins A&B. Children with cancer are at risk of developing C. difficile infection (CDI) due to increased exposure to antibiotics, immunosuppression, and longer hospital stays. Recently, due to higher sensitivity...
Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) are assumed to be increasing in abundance and toxicity, but comprehensive analysis of change through time is limited, part, because some key taxa (e.g., Microcystis) leave ambiguous evidence historical toxicity. Sedimentary DNA (sedDNA) can allow the reconstruction cyanobacteria community as well frequency genes specific cyanotoxin production, ena...
Freshwater reservoirs constitute an important source of drinking water, but eutrophication and higher temperatures increase the risk more frequent blooms cyanobacteria, including species that produce toxins. To improve prediction cyanotoxin episodes, we studied annual occurrence potential microcystin (MC) saxitoxin (STX)-producing cyanobacteria in Lobo reservoir, São Paulo State, Brazil. Relati...
