Interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-7, IL-9, IL-15, and IL-21 form a family of cytokines based on the sharing of a receptor component, the common cytokine receptor γ chain, γ c, which is encoded by the gene mutated in humans with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (XSCID). Together, these cytokines play critical roles in lymphoid development, differentiation, growth, and survival as well as med...

Severe combined immunodeficiency is a rare, fatal syndrome of diverse genetic cause in which there is combined absence of T-lymphocyte and B-lymphocyte function (and in many cases also natural killer, or NK lymphocyte function). These defects lead to extreme susceptibility to serious infections. Without intervention, the T and B-cell dysfunction usually results in severe infection and death in ...

It has been unclear whether chromosomally integrated human herpesvirus 6 (ciHHV-6) can be activated with pathogenic effects on the human body. We present molecular and virological evidence of ciHHV-6A activation in a patient with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency. These findings have significant implications for the management of patients with ciHHV-6.

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) is a disease with a genetic background in Arabian horses and crossbreeds with Arabians. The disease has been known and documented since the 1970’s and was early suggested to have an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Foals that are affected with SCID lack production of both B and T lymphocytes and consequently die from secondary diseases within a sh...

The Dutch Foundation for Quality Assessment in Clinical Chemistry (SKZL) is the professional organization that conducts external quality-assessment schemes in The Netherlands. However, such schemes in fact assess the performance of the internal quality-control systems of the participating laboratories. In this paper we describe a new concept, relating the data for internal control materials wit...

severe coronary artery disease often coexists with peripheral vascular atherosclerosis. the assessment of the supra-aortic circulation is, therefore, of clinical relevance. we herein describe a case of coronary artery disease treated with surgical revascularization using the internal mammary artery and thereafter the progressive atherosclerotic disease of the native coronary arteries as well as...
