Mechanical drift is a long-standing problem in optical microscopy that occurs in all three dimensions. This drift increasingly limits the resolution of advanced surface-coupled, single-molecule experiments. We overcame this drift and achieved atomic-scale stabilization (0.1 nm) of an optical microscope in 3D. This was accomplished by measuring the position of a fiducial mark coupled to the micr...
We address the problem of distinguishing between two sources of disagreement in annotations: genuine subjectivity and slip of attention. The latter is especially likely when the classification task has a default class, as in tasks where annotators need to find instances of the phenomenon of interest, such as in a metaphor detection task discussed here. We apply and extend a data analysis techni...
[1] Transient slip events, which occur more slowly than traditional earthquakes, are increasingly being recognized as important components of strain release on faults and may substantially impact the earthquake cycle. Surface-based geodetic instruments provide estimates of the overall slip distribution in larger transients but are unable to capture the detailed evolution of such slip, either in...
Characterizing the time evolution of slip over different phases of the seismic cycle is crucial to a better understanding of the factors controlling the occurrence of large earthquakes. In this study, we take advantage of interferometric synthetic aperture radar data and 3.5 years of continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements to determine interseismic, coseismic, and postseismic sl...
In this article we characterize the effect of transmitter clock jitter upon receiver symbol synchronization performance. Using a sinusoidal model for the timing jitter, we evaluate the bit error rate (BER) degradation and cycle slip probabilities of receivers via analysis as well as simulation for uncoded offset quadrature-phase-shift-keying (OQPSK). We evaluate performance for two different sy...
To achieve a high level of accuracy from an integrated GPS/INS system, the carrier-phase observations have to be used to update the integration filter’s states. It is a prerequisite that the integer ambiguity must be resolved before using carrier-phase measurements. However, the occurrence of an undetected cycle slip will significantly degrade the filter’s performance. In this paper, an algorit...
We present half-cycle cutoff features in the water window using high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) with two-cycle, carrier-envelope-phase-controlled pulses at 1.85 μm in a high-pressure neon target. A relative carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) shift of the acquired spectra at different pressures is related to an in situ slip of the CEP in the HHG target. A simple model based on the pressure-depend...
Total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy can be used in a wide range of cell biological applications, and is particularly well suited to analysis of the localization and dynamics of molecules and events near the plasma membrane. The TIRF excitation field decreases exponentially with distance from the cover slip on which cells are grown. This means that fluorophores close to the ...
We report on a synchronization-breaking instability observed in a noisy oscillator unidirectionally coupled to a pacemaker. Using a phase oscillator model, we find that, as the coupling strength is increased, the noisy oscillator lags behind the pacemaker more frequently and the phase slip rate increases, which may not be observed in averaged phase models such as the Kuramoto model. Investigati...
