Morphologically distinct yeast colonies from partially and fully processed fruits and vegetables were isolated over a 3-year period. Identification of 239 strains was achieved by using standard methods, commercial identification kits (API 20C and API YEAST-IDENT), and a simplified system for food-borne yeasts. The identified strains of fruit origin represented 36 species belonging to 19 genera....

A total of 62 strains of Actinomyces pyogenes (previously Corynebacterium pyogenes) were examined by the API 20 Strep system (API System, La Balme Les Grottes, Montalieu-Vercieu, France). The system was shown to be reliable and rapid when the tests were compared with standard identification methods. No confusion occurred with streptococcal profiles in the current API 20 Strep data base.

API 20E and invA PCR were evaluated for the identification of Salmonella enterica isolates from swine farms. API 20E had the highest agreement with other tests at the 99.9% likelihood level. Both tests had 100% sensitivity and 96% specificity compared to 16S rRNA sequencing. Compared to serotyping, both tests had 96% sensitivity; specificity was 86% for API 20E and 79% for invA PCR.

Of four tested identification systems (API 20E, API Rapid 32 IDE, Micronaut E, and the PCR-based Yersinia enterocolitica Amplification Set), API 20E is still the system of choice for identifying pathogenic Yersinia isolates. It provides the highest sensitivity both at the genus and at the species level and has the best cost-effectiveness correlation.

The Analytab Products Inc. (API), Micro-Drop (MD), and Uni-Yeast-Tek (UYT) systems for the presumptive identification of common clinical yeast isolates were compared with the oxidation-fermentation (OF) and a conventional procedure. With 229 coded isolates, the identification accuracies were API 94, MD 83, OF 82, and UYT 99%. The API system required the greatest technical ability. The MD materi...

the api 20e technique for identification of e.coli was evaluated and the results compared with those obtained by the conventional biochemical tests recommended in report 71. the results obtained showed very close correlation between the two methods. a total of 196 (81.6%) out of 240 isolates were identified as e.coli by api. system, while the conventional method identified only 194 (80.8%). the...

Mastitis is one of the most economic disease affecting dairy cows worldwide. Its classic diagnosis using bacterial culture and biochemical findings is a difficult and prolonged method. In this research, using of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-offlight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) permitted identification of different microorganisms with high accuracy and rapidity (only 24 ...

In the Microbial typing field, the need to have a common understanding of the concepts described and the ability to share results within the community is an increasingly important requisite for the continued development of portable and accurate sequence-based typing methods. These methods are used for bacterial strain identification and are fundamental tools in Clinical Microbiology and Bacteri...

The performance of the BD Phoenix Automated Microbiology System (BD Diagnostic Systems, Sparks, Md.) was assessed for identification (ID) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for the majority of clinically encountered bacterial isolates in a European collaborative two-center trial. A total of 469 bacterial isolates of the genera Staphylococcus (275 isolates), Enterococcus (179 isolate...
