Helcococcus ovis, a recently described organism cultured from sheep, was isolated in pure culture from a pulmonary abscess in a horse. This is the first report of this organism in horses and the first report in veterinary medicine to clearly demonstrate a pathogenic role for this organism.

The isolation of beta haemolytic streptococci was compared using Columbia sheep blood agar with and without gentamicin in a final concentration of 5.5 micrograms per ml. The inclusion of gentamicin gave greatly improved results whenever the isolation of this organism in pure culture was complicated by overgrowth with Gram-negative bacilli or staphylococci.

A sulfate-reducing bacterium has been isolated in pure culture from sheep rumen contents. Its properties agree in all respects tested with those ascribed to Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. The populations observed (about 10(8)/ml) are sufficient to account for published rates of ruminal sulfide production.

Ewe abortion and neonatal mortality are serious problems to sheep farmer. The objective of this paper was to report isolation of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from aborted fetuses in a flock in Tehran, Iran. Abortion occurred in 10% of ewes in the flock. The fetuses were well developed and pinpoint, necrotic-like lesions were recorded on the placental cotyledons, whilst the inter -cotyledonary a...

BACKGROUND In the present study, 4 different metallic implant materials, either partly coated or polished, were tested for their osseointegration and biocompatibility in a pelvic implantation model in sheep. METHODS Materials to be evaluated were: Cobalt-Chrome (CC), Cobalt-Chrome/Titanium coating (CCTC), Cobalt-Chrome/Zirconium/Titanium coating (CCZTC), Pure Titanium Standard (PTST), Steel, ...

BACKGROUND Atelectasis can provoke pulmonary and non-pulmonary complications after general anaesthesia. Unfortunately, there is no instrument to estimate atelectasis and prompt changes of mechanical ventilation during general anaesthesia. Although arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and intrapulmonary shunt have both been suggested to correlate with atelectasis, studies yielded inconsist...

When proacrosin from mouse epididymal spermatozoa was activated a single form of acrosin was produced. The enzyme was isolated by gel filtration followed by affinity chromatography using Sepharose-4B linked to an acrosin inhibitor p-(p'-aminophenoxypropoxy)benzamidine. The molecular weight of partly purified acrosin was 53 000 by gel filtration, and of the pure enzyme 39 000 by SDS-polyacrylami...

We report here a rare case of cutaneous infection due to Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum. The patient presented to the clinical laboratory with a skin ulcer on his left leg. Gram-stained preparation of the purulent secretion revealed the presence of numerous rod-shaped Gram-positive organisms in the absence of any other species. The organism was grown in pure culture on sheep blood agar an...

In two separate experiments, test sheep were inoculated with a mixture of four genetically modified strains of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, which attained a combined population level of 1 06-10’ cells per ml in each animal. The bacteria had been modified to express the enzyme fluoroacetate dehalogenase. Uninoculated sheep were used as controls. Experiment I included two Merino/ Border Leicester c...
