Serum agglutinins of chick and pigeon cells are predominantly immunoglobulin M and can be inactivated by 2 mercaptoethanol. 2 Mercaptoethanol is more effective than strong suspensions of red cells in removing the agglutinins of indicator cells from sera being prepared for HAI tests. In rubella HAI tests from a dilution of 1 to 10 dilute 2 mercaptoethanol offer a convenient method of removing ag...
Although considerable evidence has accumulated that rheumatic fever is a streptococcal infection, attempts to demonstrate specific streptococcal agglutinins in the serums of patients with tWis disease have met with only a moderate degree of success. Tunnicliff (1) performed agglutination reactions with the serums of twelve rheumatic fever patients against strains of Micrococcus rheumaticus and ...
Cold agglutinins are of unique relevance in cardiac surgerybecause of the use of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Cold autoimmune diseases are defined by the presence of abnormal circulating proteins (usually IgM or IgA antibodies) that agglutinate in response to a decrease in body temperature. These disorders include cryoglobulinemia and cold hemagglutinin disease.Immunoglobulin M aut...
1. The metabolism of six purified and radioiodinated cold agglutinins has been studied in five patients with chronic cold haemagglutinin disease and in six normal controls. Two of the patients showed overt haemolysis at the time of this study and all had complement components adsorbed to the surface of their red cells. 2. The mean fractional catabolic rate (FCR) of the cold agglutinins, studied...
Background: Malarial infection associated with common hematological abnormalities like anemia, Thrombocytopenia, Hemolytic anemia. Hemolytic anemia is due to occurrence of cold agglutinins. This study throws light on the prevalence of cold agglutinins in patients with malarial infection and their detection. Method: About 150 patients diagnosed as having Malaria by Peripheral smear, QBC for mala...
While anti-human blood group B agglutinins are present in the majority of ordinary White Leghorn chicks by the age of 30 days, none could be demonstrated in germfree chicks up to the age of 60 days. Anti-B agglutinins in trace amounts were first found in germfree chicks 66 days old and increased to an average titer of about 1:2 by 91 days of age. This titer amounts to about 10 per cent of that ...
Some of the properties of cold agglutinins in certain human sera have been listed in a recent review (1). The knowledge concerning these properties is based on studies of the phenomenon by various methods in serum or plasma from isolated cases of a large variety of conditions. With respect to the cold agglutinins in cases of primary atypical pneumonia, limited studies of certain aspects were re...
Immunologic studies performed in a case of autoimmune chronic hemolytic anemia with low titer cold agglutinins (1/16) demonstrated that the cold agglutinins corresponded to monoclonal IgG with anti-Pr specificity. This antibody had a large thermal amplitude, being active at 37 degrees C. These unusual characteristics may define a distinct subset of chronic cold agglutinin disease.
The foregoing experimental cases point to a distinct participation of the udder in the production of agglutinins when the gland is invaded by living or flooded by dead bacteria. The quarter injected reacts at first with a heavy influx of polynuclear leucocytes and later with an increase of agglutinins.
