Trends in oxygen reduction activity of Pd/Cu bimetallic random alloy nanoparticles are determined with calculations of oxygen binding for a range of compositions. A reduction in the average oxygen binding is found as Cu is added to Pd, indicating an increase in catalytic activity up to a peak at 1:1 Pd/Cu ratio. Calculations show that Cu reduces the Pd-O binding energy and Pd increases the Cu-O...

We investigated the decomposition and (partial) oxidation of methanol on Pd based catalysts in an integrated attempt, simultaneously bridging both the pressure and the materials gap. Combined studies were performed on well-defined Pd model catalysts based on ordered Al(2)O(3) and Fe(3)O(4) thin films, on well-defined particles supported on powders and on Pd single crystals. The interaction of P...

The development of efficient photocatalytic routines for producing hydrogen is of great importance as society moves away from energy sources derived from fossil fuels. Recent studies have identified that the addition of metal nanoparticles to TiO2 greatly enhances the photocatalytic performance of these materials towards the reforming of alcohols for hydrogen production. The core-shell structur...

Pd-Au bimetallic model catalysts, synthesized either as thin films on Mo(110) or as nanoparticles on a TiO2 thin film, were used in CO oxidation at both low (1 × 10-7 Torr) and elevated (8-16 Torr) CO pressures. Alloying with Au forms isolated Pd sites that are incapable of dissociating O2. This inability causes reactivity loss at low reactant pressures. Moreover, alloying also electronically m...

Graphene-supported (40-x) wt% Pd x wt% Co (0≤x≤13.33) alloys/composites have been prepared by a microwave-assisted polyol reduction method and been investigated for their structural and electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.5 M H2SO4 at 298 K. The study demonstrated that the bimetallic Pd-Co composite nanoparticles are, in fact, alloy nanoparticles with fcc cr...

Among nanoparticles used for medical applications, palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) are among the least investigated. This study was undertaken to develop PdNPs by green synthesis using white tea (W.tea; Camellia sinensis) extract to produce the [email protected] NPs. The [email protected] NPs were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry, and evaluated with transmission electron microscopy (...

A novel method for isolation of monodispersed Pd nanoparticles from a reverse microemulsion was developed using hydrocarbon evaporation and methanol-assisted particle purification from a surfactant. Fcc Pd nanoparticles of 6, 8, 11, and 13 nm in diameter were isolated from water/ AOT/isooctane mixture and used to study a size effect during solvent-free hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol to ...

Bimetallic Au-based nanoparticles (Au-M where M = Pt, Pd, Cu, Ni), synthesized by simultaneous reduction of the Au salt with noble/non-noble metal salts, exhibit a high activity for the aminoalkene (2,2-diphenylpent-4-en-1-amine) hydroamination affording the 5-membered Markovnikov product. Even though the particle size and morphology of Au-M nanoparticles are comparable to the corresponding mon...

In this paper, we show that PtAu and PdAu random alloy dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles with an average size of ∼1.6 nm have different catalytic activity trends for allyl alcohol hydrogenation. Specifically, PtAu nanoparticles exhibit a linear increase in activity with increasing Pt content, whereas PdAu dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles show a maximum activity at a Pd content of ∼60%. B...
