A new type of micro-channel plate detector based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon is proposed which overcomes the fabrication and performance issues of glass or bulk silicon ones. This new type of detectors consists in 80-100 μm thick layers of amorphous silicon which are micro-machined by deep reactive ion etching to form the channels. This paper focuses on the structure and fabrication proce...

A commercial TEM grid was used as a mask for the creation of extremely well-organized gold micro-/nano-structures on a glass substrate via a high temperature annealing process at 500 °C. The structured substrate was (bio)functionalized and used for the high throughput LSPR immunosensing of different concentrations of a model protein named bovine serum albumin.

Carbon nanotube conducting arrays were constructed via consecutive amidation reactions with the aid of a linker molecule and a condensation agent on a patterned amine-terminated glass substrate. The electrical resistivity of the nanotube films was sensitive to the degree of coverage for the substrate, making it possible to tailor nanotube multilayers suitable for use in micro- or nanoscale elec...

Er-doped phosphate glass ceramics were fabricated by melt-quenching technique followed by a heat treatment. The effect of the crystallization on the structural and luminescence properties of phosphate glasses containing Al₂O₃, TiO₂, and ZnO was investigated. The morphological and structural properties of the glass ceramics were characterized by Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SE...

For the first time, pachytene chromosomes have been used for micro-dissection, amplification and cloning using the short arm of maize chromosome 6. For this purpose, methods for the preparation of unstained pachytene chromosomes were developed. In two separate experiments, 10 and 12 segments of the satellite region were isolated utilizing glass needles and DNA was amplified by linkeradaptor-PCR...

This paper describes a dynamical strategy for releasing micro objects picked-up by means of adhesion forces. While sticking effects are used in order to capture an object by adequately choosing a high surface energy constitutive material for the end-effector, these same effects handicap considerably the release. We propose to take advantage of the inertial effects of both the end-effector and t...

Glasses and glass-ceramics (GCs) used for sealing, coating and high voltage applications belong to a special class of materials in which among other requirements, matching of thermal expansion coefficient with that of metal as closely as possible up to set temperature is an important consideration. In this paper I shall concentrate on some indigenous efforts carried out in my laboratory on the ...

A new bacteria microarray patterning technique is developed by patterning thick polycationic polymers on glass surface, which generates high-coverage and high-precision E. coli cell patterns. Cell immobilization efficiency is greatly improved, compared to conventional monolayer surface patterning approach. Cell viability tests show very low cytotoxicity of polyethyleneimine (PEI). This advancem...

This study designs and analyzes an impedance pump utilizing an electromagnetic actuator. The pump is designed to have three major components, namely a lower glass substrate patterned with a copper micro-coil, a microchannel, and an upper glass cover plate attached a magnetic PDMS diaphragm. When a current is passed through the micro-coil, an electromagnetic force is established between the coil...
