Heat-stable enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli was identified by nucleotide hybridization with RNA transcripts of the gene encoding heat-stable A-2 enterotoxin. Radiolabeled enterotoxin gene RNA transcripts are easier to prepare and avoid the preparation of cloned DNA probes that can be nonspecific if they contain cloning vector DNA.

Nineteen enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains of serogroup O78, isolated in different geographical areas from humans with diarrheal diseases, were tested for their ability to transfer enterotoxin production. All of the strains originally produced heat-labile enterotoxin, and 16 also produced heat-stable enterotoxin and colonization factor antigen I. Plasmids coding for the production of hea...

Porcine neonatal diarrhea and postweaning diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) result in significant morbidity and mortality and are economically important diseases of pigs.1 Secretory diarrhea associated with ETEC infection is mediated by any of several enterotoxins, including heat labile enterotoxin (LT), heat-stable enterotoxin-a (STa), and heat-stable enterotoxin-b (ST...

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of enterotoxigenic and enteroaggregative Escherichia coli strains and antibiotic resistance of the isolates in raw milk and unpasteurized cheese. Out of 200 samples of raw milk and 50 samples of unpasteurized cheeses, 96 and 24 strains of E. coli were isolated, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detec...

We screened 569 children with acute onset diarrhoea from five Italian towns for heat stable enterotoxin produced by Escherichia coli. We compared an enzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) with the standard suckling mouse assay for detection of the enterotoxin. A total of 31 (5.4%) children were found who had strains of E coli that produced heat stable enterotoxin: 26 strains were positive ...

The possible production of a heat-stable enterotoxin (Vc-H-ST) by Vibrio cholerae non-O1 serogroup Hakata was investigated, and the purified Vc-H-ST was characterized. It has a unique amino acid sequence, LIDCCEICCNPACFGCLN. This sequence is quite similar to that of the heat-stable enterotoxin (NAG-ST) produced by V. cholerae non-O1 except for one amino acid (leucine) residue excess at the N te...

Macromolecular absorption of gliadin, a wheat protein and alpha lactalbumin, a milk protein was evaluated in control and Escherichia coli enterotoxin (heat-stable, heat-labile, and both heat-stable and heat-labile enterotoxin) treated mice. The peak concentration of gliadin and lactalbumin was two hours and three hours after their ingestion, respectively. There was also a significant increase (...

Forty-three strains of Yersinia enterocolitica isolated from children with gastroenteritis and 18 laboratory strains were examined for enterotoxin production by using the infant mouse, Y1 adrenal cell, and rabbit ileal loop assay systems. All clinical isolates and seven laboratory strains were found enterotoxigenic in the infant mouse model, but none of the strains produced toxin in the Y1 adre...

The astA gene responsible for production of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli heatstable enterotoxin 1 (EAST1) was identified in E. coli strains isolated from pigs with postweaning diarrhea. Two hundred and twenty-six isolates were tested using PCR for the astA marker as well as for heat-labile I (LTI), heat-stable I (STI), and heat-stable II (STII) enterotoxin genes characteristic for enterot...
