An in vitro experiment based on the digestion of haemoglobin with pepsin was carried out to test the claim made by some manufacturers that the antacids used in their proprietary preparations had an intrinsic antipeptic activity independent of the change brought about by alteration of pH. In no case could these claims be substantiated.

The antacids in two didanosine placebo tablets had no significant effect on the plasma pharmacokinetics of a single oral dose of 300 mg of isoniazid administered to 12 healthy volunteers. These results suggest that isoniazid bioavailability will be unaffected by the antacids in didanosine tablets when the two medications are administered simultaneously to human immunodeficiency virus-seropositi...

Currently, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2-histamine receptor blockers (H2-blockers), antacids, and anticholinergics are used to treat acid-dependent diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. PPIs considered most effective drugs for treatment However, in real clinical practice, interest remains use antacids diseases. This is due fact that not only adsorb hydrochloric acid gastric lumen (by buff...

The frequency of milk-alkali syndrome decreased rapidly after the development of histamine-2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease; however, the availability and overconsumption of antacids and calcium supplements can still place patients at risk (D. P. Beall et al., 2006). Here we describe a patient who presented with altered mental status, hypercalce...

Antacids neutralize, rather than inhibit, acid secretion but could not be rationally prescribed until acids were understood in the mod...

The metabolism of aluminum was followed in patients who were receiving strictly controlled diets, either unaltered or supplemented with aluminum-containing antacids. Aluminum was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with a graphite furnace. All food, water, and medications were analyzed, as were aliquots of urine and stool collected throughout six-day periods. Patients were usually...
