We have identified a novel Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase gene (termed SOD-4) in Caenorhabditis elegans. Characterization of its complementary DNA revealed that the gene encodes two isoforms by alternative splicing, SOD4-1 and SOD4-2 which differ in their C-terminal exons. Their predicted amino acid sequences include a consensus signal peptide at their N-termini and are homologous to the extracellu...

The influences of spiked Zn concentrations (1-40 micromol/g) and equilibration time (approximately 95 d) on the partitioning of Zn between pore water (PW) and sediment were evaluated with estuarine sediments containing two levels (5 and 15 micromol/g) of acid volatile sulfides (AVS). Their influence on Zn bioavailability was also evaluated by a parallel, 10-d amphipod (Leptocheirus plumulosus) ...

Zinc porphyrin functionalized with double long-chain alkylated L-glutamide (GTPP-Zn) was synthesized for the first time, and its self-assembling behaviour was investigated in nonpolar organic solvents. The uniqueness of this functionalized porphyrin is characterized by its drastic colour change from dark green to purple via the formation of chirally stacked structures through selective axial co...

The O/O and C/C ratios of carbonate minerals formed by supergene oxidation of Zn–Pb deposits and submarine alteration of ancient slags were studied in order to constrain isotope fractionation factors for smithsonite, cerussite, and phosgenite, and to characterize conditions of nonsulfide ore formation. We present new isotope data of carbonate-hosted ores from the Iglesiente district (Sardinia, ...

Dietary and nondietary accumulation of waterborne zinc (Zn) by shell of abalone Haliotis diversicolor supertexta was studied to determine if abalone shell can accumulate and eliminate Zn biokinetically. Shell of H. diversicolor supertexta rapidly accumulated Zn at microgram per gram concentrations during a 7-d uptake period for dietary and nondietary exposure to 1 microgml(-1) Zn seawater. Depu...

An integrated approach which combines in-cell NMR spectroscopy with optical and X-ray fluorescence microscopy was developed to describe the intracellular maturation state of human Cu,Zn-SOD1. Microscopy data show a correlation between the intracellular levels of SOD1 and the content of zinc, corresponding to zinc binding to SOD1 observed by in-cell NMR.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the chronopharmacological effects of growth hormone on executive function and the oxidative stress response in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty male Wistar rats (36-40 weeks old) had ad libitum access to water and food and were separated into four groups: diurnal control, nocturnal control, diurnal GH-treated, and nocturnal GH-treated animals. Levels of Cu, Zn super...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of neurons in the substantia nigra that project to the striatum and release dopamine. The cause of PD remains uncertain, however, evidence implicates mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Although most cases of PD are sporadic, 5-10% of cases are caused by inherited mutations. Loss-of-function mu...

The entomopoxvirus from Amsacta moorei serves as the prototype of the group B entomopoxviruses. One of the interesting genes found in Amsacta moorei entomopoxvirus (AmEPV) is a superoxide dismutase (sod) (open reading frame AMV255). Superoxide dismutases (SODs) catalyze the conversion of superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. Many vertebrate poxviruses contain a sod gene, but to d...
