We report a near fatal case of paediatric amitriptyline overdose including a series of ECGs demonstrating the effects of sodium bicarbonate therapy on cardio-toxicity. We briefly discuss the role of sodium to counteract the sodium channel blockade of tricyclic antidepressants and discuss the possible utility of lipid emulsion therapy in such cases.

The review provides an update of drug-induced pulmonary disorders, focusing on newer agents whose effects on the lung have been studied recently. Included among these drugs are cyclosporine, cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C), amiodarone, interleukin-2 (IL-2), OKT3, tricyclic antidepressants, and bromocriptine. A brief review of the most common cytotoxic and noncytotoxic agents causing pulmonary toxi...
recent years have seen a large increase in the prescription of antidepressants in the UK. this is a field in which both research and clinical practice are developing rapidly. a new generation of ‘designer drugs’ has largely replaced the tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, on grounds of safety and tolerability rather than improved efficacy. drugs have been developed on th...
Tricyclic antidepressants and serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors are used to treat chronic pain, such as neuropathic pain. Why antidepressants are effective for treatment of neuropathic pain and the precise mechanisms underlying their effects, however, remain unclear. The inhibitory effects of these antidepressants for neuropathic pain manifest more quickly than their antidepressive ef...

This article provides background information and presents practical advice and recommendations for the clinician dealing with the treatment of depression and related disorders in the postpartum period. The present study shows the evaluation of clinical state and serum level of tricyclic antidepressants in thirty-eight depressive younger and elderly patients during 8-week observation. We observed no statistically significant differences, neither in psychometric scale scores nor in drug serum levels in both groups of patients.
In seven mongrel dogs the syndrome of depression was evoked by bilateral electrolytic lesions in lateral hypothalamus and/or dorsomedial amygdala. The effects of tricyclic antidepressants on general mood, spinal reflexes recorded by electromyographic method, and head rate were tested. The reactivity to most external stimuli was increased and general depression was slightly reduced.
If a patient has frequent, severely debilitating migraine headaches, prophylactic treatment may help. Beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, and anticonvulsants have the best evidence of efficacy; calcium channel blockers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are also popular because they are well tolerated and inexpensive. We review migraine treatment with emphasis on prophylaxis.
