OBJECTIVE To study the prevalence of and risk factors for abnormal glucose tolerance in transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemic patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 89 transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemic patients were interviewed. Diabetes was previously diagnosed in 14 of them. In the remaining 75 patients, 68 participated in an oral glucose tolerance test. Potential risk facto...
Transfusion-dependent children are more prone to acquiring various transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs), such as hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), HIV, and others. Since the magnitude of these infections among thalassaemic children in Bangladesh is not well-known, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of TTIs among them (who received more than three blood transfusions) comp...
The rate of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis E virus (HEV) in transplant recipients is unknown. We identified 60 HEV-positive solid organ transplant patients and retrospectively assessed their blood transfusions for HEV. Seven of 60 patients received transfusions; 3 received HEV-positive blood products. Transfusion is not the major route of infection in this population.
conclusions vaccination of non-immune individuals against hav infection in high risk groups especially hemophilia and thalassemia patients is recommended. results did not show any differences about seroprevalence of hev among iranian general population. results anti-hav igg antibodies were observed more frequently in thalassemia patients (60/64; 93.8%) than in hemophilia patients (104/155; 67.1...
To better understand the spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, we studied the association of HCV infection with similarly transmissible hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and with hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection, which is supposed to be related to a nosocomial transmission of HCV. This was done by studying the presence or absence of antibodies to these viruses, as well as hepatitis B su...
BACKGROUND Viral hepatitis is a serious public health problem affecting billions of people globally with maternal-fetal transmission on the rise. OBJECTIVES This study sought to determine the prevalence and factors associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections among pregnant women in the Asante Akim North Municipality, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. METHODS...
Although clinically recognized since the time of Hippocrates, viral hepatitis has been a continually enigmatic disease with each new insight raising the spectre of a new complexity. Despite remarkable advances in the past decade emanating from the discovery of the Australia antigen (Blumberg, Alter and Visnich, 1965) and its eventual linkage to viral hepatitis type B (Prince, 1968), there remai...
Blood transfusion is the process of transferring blood or blood products from one person to another. Blood transfusion can lead to the transfer of many infectious agents which can lead to Transfusion Transmitted Diseases. HBsAg is one of such infectious diseases, which leads to Hepatitis B Infection. The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus and a member of the hepadna family of viruses, and i...
The majority of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) in China were infected via blood transfusion prior to the year 1996. In this systematic retrospective cohort study, disease progression in 804 consecutive patients with transfusion-acquired HCV is investigated. In addition, the occurrence of compensated cirrhosis, decompensated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is analyzed among t...
