To determine hemodynamic and morphological changes in the stomach of portal hypertensive rats, male WKA rats were given CCl4 subcutaneously in order to induce liver cirrhosis. The portal venous pressure of cirrhotic rats was significantly higher (17.7 cm H2O) than that of controls (10.5 cm H2O). Mucosal blood flow of the stomach in the portal hypertensive rat was increased (+ 46%) compared with...

OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of the intraoperative use of terlipressin on splanchnic hemodynamics and postoperative renal function in patients undergoing liver transplantation. DESIGN Open-label, prospective, randomized study. SETTING Single-center study. PATIENTS Thirty patients who underwent elective, living-donor liver transplantation with portal pressure >20 mm Hg. INTERVENTIONS ...

BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2016218401 DESCRIPTION Oesophageal varices commonly develop in the setting of portal hypertension. A Sengstaken-Blakemore (SB) tube is sometimes emergently required to control oesophageal bleeding. 2 The normal portal pressure varies from 5 to 10 mm Hg. Portal hypertension occ...

TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt) is an effective treatment for portal hypertension. However, during the procedure, respiration, needle pressure, and possibly other factors cause the liver to move. This complicates the procedure since the portal vein is not visible during needle insertion. We present the results of a study of intraoperative liver motion.

Reduced sinusoidal endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production contributes to increased intrahepatic resistance and portal hypertension after liver injury. We hypothesized that V-PYRRO/NO, an NO donor prodrug metabolized "specifically" in the liver, would reduce portal venous pressure (PVP) without affecting the systemic vasculature. Liver injury was induced in male BALB/c mice by weekly CCl(4) ga...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Intrahepatic portal vein aneurysm is rare and its natural history is unknown. A 22-year-old healthy man, who wished to donate part of his liver to his diseased father, was incidentally diagnosed to have an intrahepatic portal vein aneurysm. The surgical decision of performing live donor hepatectomy for such a patient is normally difficult. We combined modern imaging reconstru...

Anaphylactic shock is sometimes life-threatening, and it is accompanied by hepatic venoconstriction in animals, which, in part, accounts for anaphylactic hypotension. Roles of norepinephrine and α-adrenoceptor in anaphylaxis-induced hypotension and portal hypertension were investigated in anesthetized ovalbumin-sensitized Sprague-Dawley rats. The sensitized rats were randomly allocated to the f...

BACKGROUND Plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor peptide involved in the pathogenesis of several disorders. Endothelin-1 concentrations are increased in adult patients with cirrhosis. However, little is known about ET-1 concentrations in children with cirrhosis. METHODS Radioimmune assay was used to measure plasma ET-1 concentrations in 19 children with cirrhosis (8 patients ...
