BACKGROUND Neonatal deaths account for over 40% of all under-5 year deaths; their reduction is increasingly critical for achieving Millennium Development Goal 4. An estimated 3 million newborns die annually during their first month of life; half of these deaths occur during delivery or within 24 hours. Every year, 6 million babies require help to breathe immediately after birth. Resuscitation t...
For many years, newborn infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units have had routine electrocardiography and been monitored for respiratory rate, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure. Only recently has it also been considered important to monitor brain function using continuous electroencephalography. The role of cerebral function monitoring in sick full term and preterm infa...
BACKGROUND Pregnant women with type 1 diabetes are a high-risk population who are recommended to strive for optimal glucose control, but neonatal outcomes attributed to maternal hyperglycaemia remain suboptimal. Our aim was to examine the effectiveness of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) on maternal glucose control and obstetric and neonatal health outcomes. METHODS In this multicentre, op...
In France during 2012, human enterovirus 71 (EV-A71) subgenogroup C4 strains were detected in 4 children hospitalized for neonatal fever or meningitis. Phylogenetic analysis showed novel and independent EV-A71 introductions, presumably from China, and suggested circulation of C4 strains throughout France. This observation emphasizes the need for monitoring EV-A71 infections in Europe.
Infection of the internal umbilical remnants is a common problem in neonatal foals. Accurate diagnosis and monitoring response to medical therapy requires knowledge of the ultrasonographic technique, anatomy, and dimensions of normal structures. Authors’ addresses: Department of Large Animal Medicine, P.O. Box 100136 (Franklin) and Department of Radiology, P.O. Box 100102 (Ferrell), College of ...
Preterm birth is associated with significant neonatal mortality and morbidity nationwide. Multiple strategies have been used to attempt to reduce the incidence of preterm births, and none have been entirely successful. The current review contains assessment of recent literature and home uterine activity monitoring. It also makes some suggestions about how and when this diagnostic modality may b...
We describe our investigations in generating textual summaries of physiological time series data to aid medical personnel in monitoring babies in neonatal intensive care units. Our studies suggest that summarization is a communicative task that requires data analysis techniques for determining the content of the summary. We describe a prototype system that summarizes physiological time series.
C reactive protein (CRP) concentrations are used routinely in the investigation and monitoring of neonatal sepsis. In this study, CRP responses were examined in the first week after birth. Among infants showing a clinically relevant CRP response, CRP concentrations > 60 mg/l were more likely with increasing gestational age.
Neonatal monitoring refers to the monitoring of vital physiological parameters of premature infants, full term infants that are critically ill, and a combination thereof. Babies that are born after a pregnancy lasting 37 weeks or less are typically considered premature. Critically ill neonates are a special group of patients that consist of premature infants who may suffer from diseases that ar...
Neonatal severe primary hyperparathyroidism presents in the first days of life with severe life-threatening hypercalcemia. It is associated with an inactivating homozygous mutation of the calcium sensing receptor gene. Total parathyroidectomy is the treatment of choice, so the surgeon must identify all the parathyroid tissue, including supernumerary and ectopic glands. We present the case of an...
