One hundred and seven clinical isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes, 80 susceptible to macrolides and 27 resistant to erythromycin A (MIC >0.5 microgram/ml), were examined. The erythromycin A-lincomycin double-disk test assigned 7 resistant strains to the M-phenotype, 8 to the inducible macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B resistance (iMLS(B)) phenotype, and 12 to the constitutive MLS(B) r...

Sir, Recently in Australia, prescribing patterns for lincosamides have changed. Parenteral lincomycin use now exceeds parenteral clindamycin use in hospitals, including intensive care units. The reasons pertain to availability, cost and the recommendations of the national antibiotic guidelines. The Australian therapeutic guidelines present lincomycin and clindamycin as equivalent treatments for...

The aim of this study was to investigate antimicrobial susceptibilities and macrolide resistance mechanisms of beta-hemolytic viridans group streptococci (VGS) in a tertiary Korean hospital. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of seven antimicrobials were determined for 103 beta-hemolytic VGS isolated from various specimens. The macrolide resistance mechanisms of erythromycin-resistant iso...

A retrospective study was conducted to assess the relationships between clindamycin resistance in members of the Bacteroides fragilis group, previous antimicrobial therapy, and the context for the development of infection, whether in the community or during hospitalization. Eighty-five clindamycin-resistant clinical strains (one isolate per patient) isolated from January 1988 to October 1994 we...

BACKGROUND Invasive infections from community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) are increasingly being encountered in healthy children. Nasal colonization of MRSA is associated with increased risk for acquiring invasive disease. The objective of this study was to determine prevalence and risk factors for CA-MRSA nasal colonization among a healthy paediatric populati...

Resistance of group B streptococcus (GBS) to antibiotics, particularly erythromycin and clindamycin, was studied. Erythromycin resistance was present in 22% of GBS isolates, and these isolates were constitutively resistant, inducibly resistant, or sensitive to clindamycin. Erythromycin and clindamycin MICs were related to the presence of ermA, ermB, or mefA genes.
