As a generalized form of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE), absence status epilepticus is the most common form. It manifests as prolonged, confusional states of varying severity, and continuous or repetitive generalized discharges of spikes, multiple spikes, and slow waves on EEG. Jeavons syndrome (JS) is a new type of epilepsy syndrome. Hitherto, only four sets of monozygotic twin with J...

There is currently little agreement between hospital protocols when treating convulsive status epilepticus in children, and a working party has been set up to produce a national evidence based guideline for treating this condition. This four step guideline is presented in this paper. Its eVectiveness will be highlighted and its use audited in a number of centres. (Arch Dis Child 2000;83:415–419)

SMART syndrome (stroke like migraine attacks after radiation) has been described as a late delayed side effect of cerebral irradiation and comprises prolonged, unilateral, neurological symptoms with transient, cortical gadolinium enhancement sometimes punctuated by seizures and ipsilateral EEG slowing [1]. Here we describe a patient with non-convulsive status epilepticus with prominent negative...

Purpose. The only consistent symptom of ring chromosome 20 syndrome (r(20)) is severe, refractory epilepsy often associated with a characteristic, although not pathognomonic, EEG pattern. Patients suffer from severe seizures with accompanying cognitive decline and frequent episodes of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (SE). Other features of this rare disorder, such as dysmorphic changes, mental...

Status epilepticus refractory to sequential trials of multiple medication is a rare but significant problem in children. We describe stimulus sensitivity arising during the treatment of convulsive status epilepticus in children (stimulus-sensitive burst-spiking in burst-suppression). We reviewed retrospectively clinical and EEG features in six children (three months to ten years), with status e...

This study aimed to determine the etiology, treatment protocol and outcome of convulsive status epilepticus (SE) in children. An institutional treatment protocol using benzodiazepines (diazepam and midazolam) was assessed in a retrospective case study. The treatment protocol (Ege Pediatric Status Epilepticus Protocol or EPSEP) was developed based on an operational definition of pediatric SE acc...

Absence status epilepticus is characterized by a prolonged state of impaired consciousness or altered sensorium with generalized electroencephalographic abnormalities. It is most commonly diagnosed in patients with known idiopathic generalized epilepsy; however, it may also be the first presentation of epilepsy. Due to the subtle and variable manifestations of the condition, absence status epil...
