Background/Aims: Standard triple therapy (STT; proton pump inhibitor [PPI]+clarithromycin+amoxicillin) used for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication has shown low treatment success rates in recent years, which is most likely attributable to increased clarithromycin resistance. In this study, we compared of tailored (TT) using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and empirical STT...

BACKGROUND Antibiotic resistance is a major therapeutic problem in patients infected with Helicobacter pylori. H. pylori clarithromycin resistant mutants have been evolved during antibiotic therapy, this is mainly due to 23s rRNA point mutations. OBJECTIVES In the present study, we investigated anti-mutational features of four traditionally Iranian medicinal plants on three local isolated H. ...

According to a recent consensus statement concerning Helicobacter pylori infection in children (3), upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsies is the preferred method for establishing an etiologic diagnosis of infection. The treatment recently recommended for children combines a gastric acid inhibitor, usually a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), with two antimicrobial agents, an antimicrobial ag...

BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori eradication rates in Portugal are declining, due to increased resistance of this bacterium to antimicrobial agents, especially Clarithromycin. Quadruple Levofloxacin-containing regimens could be an option for first-line treatment, but its efficacy should be evaluated as fluoroquinolone resistance is rapidly increasing. Our aim was to compare the efficacy of Clarit...

Plasmid-mediated kanamycin resistance was detected in a strain of Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. bolletii responsible for a nationwide epidemic of surgical infections in Brazil. The plasmid did not influence susceptibility to tobramycin, streptomycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, clarithromycin, or ciprofloxacin. Plasmid-mediated drug resistance has not been described so far in mycobacteria.

Antibiotic resistance is considered the cause of unsuccessful eradication of Helicobactor pylori (H. pylori) infections. Awareness of regional resistance rates of H. pylori isolates can improve not only empiric antibiotic therapy but also lead to the development of second line treatment and rescue regimens. At present, the most common treatment is empiric eradication. Global regional regimen th...
