Primary atypical mycobacteriosis of the lung is comparatively common but primary atypical mycobacteriosis of the intestine had not been described previously in the English literature. We have treated three such patients with antituberculous drugs and the clinicopathological findings and course are described. We suggest that these findings may belong to a new clinical entity.

Linezolid (LNZ), a group 5 antituberculous drug (unclear efficacy), was used in the starter regimens of 23 adults with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The LNZ-containing regimens were effective in achieving culture conversions and relapse-free outcomes. The most frequent LNZ-related side effect was neuropathy. We propose that LNZ should be reclassified among bactericidal second-line drugs.

We report a case of peri-prosthetic tuberculous infection nine years after total hip arthroplasty in a patient with no history of tuberculosis before the procedure. Further investigation revealed active pulmonary tuberculosis which was thought to have spread haematogeneously to the arthroplasty. The infection did not respond to standard antituberculous drugs. Removal of the prosthesis and inser...

BACKGROUND Treatment of advanced active tuberculosis (TB) of the hip is confronted with great challenges. Although one-stage total hip arthroplasty (THA) is considered as a safe procedure for most patients by some authors, there are still exceptions. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of two-stage THA for selected patients with advanced active TB of t...

The surgical and antimicrobial treatment of non-tuberculous mycobacterial lymphadenopathy in 17 children was reviewed. Node excision was curative, but most nodes were still incised leaving discharging lesions. Standard antituberculous treatment was unhelpful, but a new macrolide/quinolone combination appeared to be effective in three cases.
