In this paper we will present the objectives of a Network Robot System project denominated URUS, a European IST-STREP project of the FP6 program. The general objective of the project is the development of new ways of cooperation between network robots and human beings and/or the environment in urban areas. The focus of the project is in urban pedestrian areas, an important topic in Europe where...

Improving urban walkability is critical to the long-term development of cities. Although previous studies have demonstrated a relationship between built environment and walking, an approach that can control exploration different functional areas has not yet been discussed. In this study, features include density, design, diversity, destination accessibility, distance transit. Geodetector regres...

This work presents a vision-based system for detecting and localizing pedestrians in road environments by means of a statistical technique. Initially, attentive vision techniques relying on the search for specific characteristics of pedestrians such as vertical symmetry and strong presence of edges, allow to select interesting regions likely to contain pedestrians. These regions are then used t...

This paper presents the method for detecting pedestrian recently implemented on the ARGO vehicle. The perception of the environment is performed through the sole processing of images acquired from a vision system installed on board of the vehicle: the analysis of a monocular image delivers a first coarse detection, while a distance refinement is performed thanks to a stereo vision technique.

In this project, I develop an approach to post process local pedestrian detection by incorporating cues from the background. This approach uses a combination of several location specific color classifiers to quickly reduce the number of the local detector responses by discarding improbable results. An experimental method for color comparison is explored in this project to supplement existing te...

Recent studies by police departments and researchers confirm that police stop persons of racial and ethnic minority groups more often than whites relative to their proportions in the population. However, it has been argued that stop rates more accurately reflect rates of crimes committed by each ethnic group, or that stop rates reflect elevated rates in specific social areas, such as neighborho...

Although recent advances in sensor technologies draw our attention to indoor spaces, no fully functional indoor 3D models are available as of now. Researchers in 3D modeling field have focused on representing 3D volumes using B-rep method and suggested different theoretical types of topological relationships. However, very few of them are related with explicit implementations for indoor spaces....
