A prototype jig to attach a protein crystallization plate to a standard X-ray goniometer has been designed and constructed in partnership with an engineering firm. This allows a low-cost implementation of in situ diffraction using the available home-laboratory X-ray source.

This paper describes a VHDL based rapid prototyping approach to simulate, synthesize, and implement a prototype computer system using commercial CAD tools, a meta assembler, a retargetable C compiler, and FPGAs in a hardware emulator. A novel two-beam interferometer for the measurement of a refractive index or its induced changes is described. This interferometer consists of only two optical elements and is largely insensitive to their movement. A laboratory prototype has been built. It uses a polarized version of the folded Jamin interferometer to allow for convenient phase adjustment.

Using data obtained in a laboratory thermal convection experiment at high Rayleigh numbers, it is shown that the multiscaling properties of the observed mean wind reversals are quantitatively consistent with analogous multiscaling properties of the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld prototype model of self-organized criticality in two dimensions.

The results of the evaluation of the components of the second MultiMatch system prototype (P2) are reported and details of the experiments that have been conducted are given.
