A 7-month-old Holstein heifer presented with posterior paresis and megaesophagus. At post mortem examination, a nodular tumor was found attached to the thoracic wall and the eighth to eleventh thoracic vertebrae, adjacent to the left posterior pulmonary lobe. The tumor was diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma by histology. This is a very rare case of spinal infiltration of rhabdomyosarcoma in cattle.

Liver abscesses are the primary liver abnormality of feedlot cattle at slaughter. The incidence of liver abscesses is highly variable, but generally ranges from 10% to 20%. The incidence of total and the proportion of severely abscessed livers (A+) are greater in Holsteins fed for beef production and culled dairy cows than in beef breeds. The reason for the greater incidence of liver abscesses ...

A mating plan was designed to test the genetic hypothesis that atresia coli is inherited as an autosomal recessive at a single locus with two alleles. Matings between 8 putative carrier sires and 56 putative carrier dams resulted in 59 normal and 8 atresia coli calves, which was not different from the expected number of 8.1 affected calves. One case of atresia coli was observed among 628 calves...

Pit-1 gene has been identified as the pituitary specific transcription factor that regulates the expression of the growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) genes in the anterior pituitary. The use of polymorphic markers in breeding programmes could make selection more accurate and efficient. A total of 252, 181 Holstein cows and 71 native East Anatolian Red (EAR) cattle, were genotyped for polym...

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) to enhance growth performance and carcass characteristics in calf-fed Holstein steers. In Exp. 1, Holstein steers (n = 2,311) were fed in a large-pen trial in 2 phases at a commercial feed yard in the desert Southwest. In Exp. 2, a total of 359 steers were fed in a small-pen university study. In Exp. 1...

In our study, we estimated the frequency of haplotype for cholesterol deficiency (HCD) carriers in Russian Holstein cattle population. We studied 1817 random samples cows born 2010-2017 from ten herds and 331 heifers other three 2016-2019, fathers or mothers which were HCD carriers. The method AS-PCR was used animals genotyping. first group animals, incidence 8.09%, second one - 23.26%. Our res...

Neosporosis is caused by the protozoan parasite, Neospora caninum which is major cause of fatal disease and abortion in cattle in Iran and in many countries. The economic impacts of neosporosis are lost milk, meat and abortions in cattle. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the presence of N. caninum DNA in fresh and frozen semen samples of Iranian bulls that were used for artifici...

Anaphylactic reaction rarely occurs after the 1st injection of penicillin-streptomycin in cattle. Immediately following intramuscular injection of a Holstein-Friesian cow with penicillin-streptomycin, the cow showed abnormal clinical signs that included respiratory distress, urticaria, and lacrimation. Recovery took approximately 2 h after intramuscular injection of dexamethasone. This report p...

We report on a complete genome scan for quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting milk protein percentage (PP) in the Italian Holstein-Friesian cattle population, applying a selective DNA pooling strategy in a daughter design. Ten Holstein-Friesian sires were chosen, and for each sire, about 200 daughters, each from the high and low tails of estimated breeding value for PP, were used to construct...

The aim of this research was to investigate the changes in milk yield and its composition, fatty acid profile and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors gamma (PPARG) gene expression in adipose tissue of Iranian Holstein cattle in response to feeding isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets but formulated based on different oilseeds (soybean or canola seeds). Twenty cows were tested ra...
