INTRODUCTION Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), though common, is often asymptomatic. However, spinal hyperostosis can predispose the affected to chronic myelopathic symptoms and acute spinal cord injury. CLINICAL PICTURE We report on 3 patients with DISH, who sustained traumatic cervical cord injuries. Two were tetraplegic at presentation. The radiologic findings of the patient...

This study provides a basic introduction to agent-based modeling (ABM) as a powerful blend of classical and constructive mathematics, with a primary focus on its applicability for social science research. The typical goals of ABM social science researchers are discussed along with the culture-dish nature of their computer experiments. The applicability of ABM for science more generally is also ...

The work presented in this review describes the use of large cortical networks developing ex vivo, in a culture dish, to study principles underlying synchronization, adaptation, learning, and representation in neuronal assemblies. The motivation to study neuronal networks ex vivo is outlined together with a short description of recent results in this field. Following a short description of the ...

Agent-based computational economics (ACE) is the computational study of economies modeled as evolving systems of autonomous interacting agents. Starting from initial conditions, specified by the modeler, the computational economy evolves over time as its constituent agents repeatedly interact with each other and learn from these interactions. ACE is therefore a bottom-up culture-dish approach t...

The number and severity of diseases affecting human lung development and adult respiratory function has stimulated great interest in new in vitro models to study the human lung. This review summarizes the most recent breakthroughs deriving lung lineages in a dish by directing the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells. A variety of culturing platforms have been developed, including two...

The tissues of a multicellular animal are composed of diverse cell types arranged in a precisely organized pattern. Features unique to muscle allow an analysis of pattern formation and maintenance in mammals. The progeny of single cells can be taken full cycle from the animal to the culture dish and back to the animal where they fuse into mature myofibers of the host. These features not only fa...

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is characterized by anterior and lateral ossification of the vertebral body. We present a case report of central cord syndrome in a patient with DISH after minor trauma. The patient was treated surgically. We also discuss symptomatology and the common mechanism of cord injury in DISH.

In diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), recurrence of hyperostosis after surgical removal is common. While both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and radiotherapy have been used in the prevention of heterotopic ossification, only NSAIDs have been applied for prophylaxis in DISH. As a previously undescribed prophylaxis of recurrence in DISH, we report a case treated with...

Study Design Retrospective study. Objectives Assess demographics, ossification characteristics, surgical outcomes, and complications in patients with both diffuse idiopathic spinal hyperostosis (DISH) and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) compared with patients who only have OPLL. Methods Clinical charts and radiographs of all patients treated surgically from February 2...

A human colonic epithelial cell line, T84, derived from a colonic carcinoma, has been examined both morphologically and functionally. The cells grew to confluence as a monolayer with the basolateral membrane attached to the surface of the culture dish and a microvillus-studded apical membrane facing the media. Tight junctions and desmosomes were demonstrated between adjacent cells. Confluent mo...
