A patient with infectious mononucleosis complicated by acute haemolytic anaemia is described. The patient had, in addition to non-specific cold agglutinins in the serum, a positive Donath-Landsteiner reaction in the absence of syphilis. The association of a positive Donath-Landsteiner reaction with haemolytic anaemia in infectious mononucleosis has been described only once before.

In a herd of cattle in which several cows are infected with Brucella abortus, it has been observed for many years that seldom, if ever, do all adult cows become infected. Very often a considerable percentage of animals in such a herd even fail to show by diagnostic tests indications of having been exposed to infection. It has been assumed that they were resistant to infection, this resistance b...

Examination of the sequences of the first complementarity-determining segments of the light chains of two IgM cold agglutinins agains blood group I, four monoclonal IgM antibodies against IgG proteins, and of three Bence Jones proteins provides clues for predicting which residues contribute to antibody specificity and indicates that these predictions may be tested by evaluating recovery of anti...

Vegetative (noncohesive) D. discoideum cells and cells at several stages during the development of cohesiveness were fixed with glutaraldehyde, and their agglutinability by purified carbohydrate-binding proteins (lectins) from slime molds and plants was determined. The two purified lectins from D. discoideum, called discoidin I and II, were poor agglutinins of fixed vegetative D. discoideum ce...

The test serum for detecting the Rh antigen in the red cells of the human population may be prepared according to the technique originally described by Landsteiner and Weiner (1941) by the injection of red cells from the Rhesus monkey into . guinea-pigs or rabbits. As in other immunological experiments, only a few of the animals thus treated yield a satisfactory anti-serum. Even then, the actio...

Hematogenous pyelonephritis was produced in rats utilizing multiple strains of Escherichia coli, a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae, and a strain of Proteus mirabilis. Three patterns of hematogenous pyelonephritis occurred which represent an interrelationship between an immune response to the infecting bacteria and the development of obstructive uropathy as a consequence of infection. First, the...

Introduction Primary cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a haemolytic anaemia caused by high titres of cold antibodies, usually IgM, directed against red blood cells1,2. Cold agglutinins are present at low titres in all normal individuals, but at high concentrations, the agglutinins can have pathological consequences. In the cool peripheral circulation, cold agglutinin-coated red blood cells activ...

AIMS--The study was carried out to search for labelling similar to that of intraocular exfoliation material in the conjunctiva by light microscopy using lectin and immunohistochemistry. METHODS--Ten formalin fixed and paraffin embedded conjunctival biopsy specimens both from patients with and without exfoliation syndrome were studied with a panel of 11 lectins and with three monoclonal antibodi...

The development of Candida albicans biofilms requires two types of adhesion molecule - the Als proteins and Hwp1. Mutational analyses have recently revealed that these molecules play complementary roles, and their characteristics suggest that they may have evolved from primitive mating agglutinins.
