This work focuses on designing bilayered constructs by combining electrospun poly-DL-Lactide (PDLLA) fibers and Bioglass®-derived scaffolds for development of osteochondral tissue replacement materials. Electrospinning was carried out using a solution of 5 wt/v% PDLLA in dimethyl carbonate. The PDLLA layer thickness increased from 2 to 150 µm with varying electrospinning time. Bioactivity studi...

OBJECTIVES The presence of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) split bundles was recently described in normal eyes scanned using scanning laser polarimetry and by histologic studies. Split bundles may resemble RNFL loss in healthy eyes. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of nerve fiber layer split bundles in healthy people. MATERIALS AND METHODS We imaged 718 eyes of 359 health...

Large soft tissue defects involve significant tissue loss, requiring surgical reconstruction. Autologous flaps are occasionally scant, demand prolonged transfer surgery, and induce donor site morbidity. The present work set out to fabricate an engineered muscle flap bearing its own functional vascular pedicle for repair of a large soft tissue defect in mice. Full-thickness abdominal wall defect...

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on long-term reliability of CVD HA), gate stacks with n+-poly-Si gate electrodes. The area dependence and temperature acceleration (Z5-150°C) of TDDB, defect generation rate, and critical defect density of CVD HA), gate stacks are studied. Results show that IO year lifetime of Hm,/ n+-poly-Si gate stack (EOT=14.5.&) is projected for Vg=-Z.OV @25"C...

BACKGROUND PET reconstruction incorporating spatially variant 3D Point Spread Function (PSF) improves contrast and image resolution. "Cardiac Motion Frozen" (CMF) processing eliminates the influence of cardiac motion in static summed images. We have evaluated the combined use of CMF- and PSF-based reconstruction for high-resolution cardiac PET. METHODS Static and 16-bin ECG-gated images of 20...

Purpose. To evaluate the diagnostic ability of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) deviation map for glaucoma with localized or diffuse RNFL defects. Methods. Eyes of 139 glaucoma patients and 165 healthy subjects were enrolled. All participants were imaged with Cirrus HD-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA). A RNFL defect was defined as at least 10 contiguous red (<1% level) superpixels ...

This paper presents a 3D boundary element model (BEM), formulated in the frequency domain, to simulate heat diffusion by conduction in the vicinity of 3D cracks. The model intends to contribute to the interpretation of infrared thermography (IRT) data results and to explore the features of this nondestructive testing technique (NDT) when it is used to detect and characterize defects. The defect...

Early detection of axonal tissue loss in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is critical for effective treatment and management of diseases such as glaucoma. This study aims to evaluate the capability of ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography with adaptive optics (UHR-AO-OCT) for imaging the RNFL axonal bundles (RNFBs) with 3×3×3μm(3) resolution in the eye. We used a research-grade UHR-...

The nose is a common site for basal and squamous cell carcinomas. Surgical excision can leave a defect that is appropriate for reconstruction with full thickness skin grafting. Tie-over dressings have gained popularity in this setting. We propose that steri-strips alone provide the necessary support to facilitate excellent graft take.

DESCRIPTION A 67-year-old man underwent full-thickness skin graft reconstruction of an ear defect following skin cancer excision. The graft was dropped on the floor during preparation. Following decontamination, it was subsequently used to complete the reconstruction, with full graft take and no evidence of infection after 4 months of follow-up.
