The occurrence together of two major distinct diseases in the oral area is relatively rare. In this report, a case is presented in which histiocytosis X was found to develop in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The nature of the differentiated histiocytoses is explored, and the possibility of the relationship between a lymphoproliferative and a histiocytic disease entity is investigated.
Rosai-Dorfman disease is a rare benign histiocytic disease that infrequently presents in the spine. We report a case of Rosai-Dorfman disease isolated to the epidural thoracic spine in a 26-year-old male. To our knowledge, this is the 15th reported case of isolated spinal disease and only the fourth case of isolated thoracic epidural disease. Given its rarity as well as non-specific symptoms an...
Serum lysozyme activities were measured in 34 control subjects, 13 untreated adult coeliac patients, 21 adult coeliac patients on gluten-free diet, and eight coeliac patients with a histiocytic lymphoma. Serum lysozyme activities were raised in three untreated patients, three patients treated with a gluten-free diet, and in only two patients with coeliac disease and lymphoma. Serum lysozyme est...
Transgenic mice expressing the tax gene from human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-I) genome developed T-cell leukemia or histiocytic sarcoma after at least 12 months. The transgenic mice showed low expression of the downstream of tyrosine kinase (DOK) family members, DOK1, DOK2 and DOK3, which were recently reported to be tumor suppressor genes. Mice showed low DOK2 expression at 5-6 months...
Transient ileocolic intussusception in a dog with histiocytic ulcerative tiflocolitis: a case report
In human medicine, the association between intussusceptions and inflammatory bowel disease is well known, even if referred to only in case reports or a small series of patients. The exact cause of intussusceptions, in general, is unknown; however, any lesion in the bowel wall or irritant in the lumen that alters the normal peristaltic pattern may initiate invagination. In Crohn’s disease the le...
Histiocytes and dendritic cells belong to a group of immunoregulatory cells that are responsible for antigen processing and presentation to lymphocytes. Neoplasms of histiocytic and dendritic origin are very rare [1], making up less than 1% of tumours in lymph nodes. Thus, information regarding epidemiology, prognosis and treatment [2, 3] is scarce. Table 1 summatizes the neoplasms derived from...
Rosai-Dorfman disease is a rare benign histiocytic disorder that arises predominantly in lymph nodes with fever and malaise, but can affect various organs, with or without lymphadenopathy. Solitary extranodal skeletal lesions are extremely rare. Herein, we describe a case of isolated disease of thoracic spine, with vertebral body fracture. A 14-year-old girl presented with cervical back pain fo...
BACKGROUND The determination of altered expression of genes in specific tumor types and their effect upon cellular processes may create insight in tumorigenesis and help to design better treatments. The Flatcoated retriever is a dog breed with an exceptionally high incidence of histiocytic sarcomas. The breed develops two distinct entities of histiocytic neoplasia, a soft tissue form and a visc...
Histiocytic cell malignancies are very rare. Hence, the information about this disease in hematology is limited. In this case report, we present a case of malignant histiocytic tumor affecting the ovary of a 40-year-old virgin female. Primary ovarian malignancy was not considered for the patient who was approached as if she had ovarian malignancy, since there was an indication of a mass in the ...
