Previous research has shown that math anxiety negatively affected cognitive performance in adults and adolescents beyond arithmetic. In children, math anxiety has been reported to impair arithmetic performance mainly in girls, but the effect of math anxiety on other cognitive skills has not been investigated in children so far. To fill this gap, the present study examined the effects of math an...

We consider the half-linear second order differential equation which is viewed as a perturbation of the so-called Riemann-Weber half-linear differential equation. We present a comparison theorem with respect to the power of the half-linearity in the equation under consideration. Our research is motivated by the recent results published by J. Sugie, N.Yamaoka, Acta Math. Hungar. 111 (2006), 165–...

We study the effect of s-wave cross-sections in 4He+n and 9Li+n elastic scattering reactions by using the Jost function method (JFM). In 5He (4He+n), the s-wave pole of the S-matrix does not contribute so much to the total cross-section. On the other hand, in 10Li (9Li+n), the s-wave component can not be neglected due to a relatively strong attraction for the s-waves of the core+n potential. It...

Math is usually taught using a lot of words. But, is this the way the human brain learns math? We studied how math is related to memory, intelligence, and reading in 7-year-old children. We found that memory for visual information (things you can see) and spatial information (where things are located in relationship to each other) is related to math skills more than memory for words and verbal ...

Previous research shows that children's ability to estimate numbers of items using their Approximate Number System (ANS) predicts later math ability. To more closely examine the predictive role of early ANS acuity on later abilities, we assessed the ANS acuity, math ability, and expressive vocabulary of preschoolers twice, six months apart. We also administered attention and memory span tasks t...

This study explored the relationship between students’ math ability and effort in predicting 6 grade students’ performance in the Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) system. The students were clustered into four groups by Kmeans: high ability high effort, high ability low effort, low ability high effort and low ability low effort. A one-way ANOVA indicated that student’s math po...

The Natural Math project’s main goal is to create mathematical curriculum around concepts of higher math (algebra, calculus and “post-calculus” subjects), presented in a way that makes them available with minimal prerequisites. In particular, the results of the project make it possible and desirable to teach higher math to very young children and math-anxious adults.

We used structural modeling procedures to assess the influence of past math grades, math ability perceptions, performance expectancies, and value perceptions on the level of math anxiety reported in a sample of 7ththrough 9th-grade students (N = 250). A second set of analyses examined the relative influence of these performance, self-perception, and affect variables on students' subsequent grad...
