BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Severe ischemic changes are a rare but devastating complication following direct superficial temporal artery to MCA bypass in patients with Moyamoya disease. This study was undertaken to determine whether preoperative MR imaging and/or cerebrovascular reserve assessment by using reference standard stable xenon-enhanced CT could predict such complications. MATERIALS AND ...

We previously developed a cross-sectional echocardiographic technique for quantitatively mapping the endocardial surface of the left ventricle and on which regions of abnormal wall motion can be superimposed in their correct spatial distribution. This endocardial mapping technique (EMT) provides a measure of the left ventricular endocardial surface area (ESA in cm2), the area of abnormal wall m...

background: the cardiac effects simultaneously occurring during experimental hypertension and diabetes have rarely been investigated. this study aimed at examining the effects of short-term renovascular hypertension and type 2 diabetes on cardiac functions. methods: five groups (7 each) of male sprague-dawley rats, including a control group, a diabetes (induced by streptozocin and nicotinamide)...

Suicide was initiated by several incisions in the skin; the resulting hypovolemia resulted in fatal hypothermia. The unusual autopsy findings in this case due to hypothermia were focal hemorrhages and necrosis of the pancreas and hemorrhagic infarction of the descendending colon. The pathophysiological relevance of the autopsy and histological findings are discussed.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Perfusion CT has been used to assess the extent of blood-brain barrier breakdown. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive value of blood-brain barrier permeability measured using perfusion CT for development of malignant middle cerebral artery infarction requiring hemicraniectomy (HC). METHODS We retrospectively identified patients from our stroke regi...

OBJECTIVES To determine the incidence of early left ventricular infarct expansion within five days after first anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and the effect of early thrombolytic therapy on the incidence of early infarct expansion compared with late thrombolytic therapy. METHODS In a prospective study of 101 patients (75males and 26 females), with the first attack of acut...

BACKGROUND High body temperatures after ischemic stroke have been associated with larger infarct size, but the temporal profile of this relation is unknown. We assess the relation between temporal profile of body temperature and infarct size and functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS In 419 patients with acute ischemic stroke we assessed the relation between body t...

Six of 101 patients with acute myocardial infarction whose coronary arteries were successfully recanalised died in cardiogenic shock one to 18 days after intracoronary thrombolysis. In one patient, cardiogenic shock was preceded by coronary artery reocclusion. On admission, serum creatine kinase was still normal in all six patients and there was significant ST elevation but no changes in the QR...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Infarct volume may predict clinical outcome in acute stroke, but manual segmentation techniques limit its routine use. We hypothesized that computer-assisted volumetric analysis to quantify acute infarct volume will show no difference compared with manual segmentation but will show increased speed of performance and will correlate with outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pat...

Background and Purpose—Microglia and astrocytes in the peri-infarct region are activated in response to focal stroke. A critical function of activated glia is formation of a protective barrier that ultimately forms a new glial-limiting membrane. Osteopontin, a provisional matrix protein expressed during wound healing, is induced after focal stroke. The present study was performed to determine t...
