External ophthalmomyiasis, usually caused by the sheep nasal bot fly, Oestrus ovis L., is characteristically a benign disorder in humans, but may rarely cause severe complications. It occurs on most of the inhabited Hawaiian islands, and is more common than indicated by previously published reports. A typical case is presented along with the fly's life cycle, clinical features, and management.

Important advances have been made within the last two decades in the field of fracture management. The development of the AO internal fixation system and the advances in cast bracing techniques are but two of the improvements worthy of mention. It is, however, in the field of external fixation of fractures that the greatest advances have been made. This paper traces the history of external fixa...

CLINICAL SCENARIO Initial, traumatic shoulder dislocations, particularly in an anterior direction, are among the most common shoulder injuries. Traditionally, nonsurgical treatment for first-time shoulder dislocations consists of immobilization in internal rotation (IR). However, there is a high rate of recurrence after this course of treatment. Recent reports indicate that immobilization in ex...

Laboratories offering a quality service for the microbiological examination of food must implement a quality assurance system. An effective system should, in addition to daily quality control of procedures, consumables, and equipment, include external laboratory accreditation to a recognised standard, the use of validated test methods, and participation in an external quality assessment (profic...

This work reports both experimental and theoretical studies on the InGaN/GaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with optical output power and external quantum efficiency (EQE) levels substantially enhanced by incorporating p-GaN/n-GaN/p-GaN/n-GaN/p-GaN (PNPNP-GaN) current spreading layers in p-GaN. Each thin n-GaN layer sandwiched in the PNPNP-GaN structure is completely depleted due to the built-in ...

We examined whether the combination of two factors that have consistently been found to enhance motor learning - an external focus (EF) of attention and autonomy support (AS) - would produce additive benefits. Participants practiced throwing with their non-dominant arm. In a 2×2 design, they were or were not asked to focus externally (i.e., on the target), and were or were not given a choice (a...

The credit crisis of 2007 and 2008 has thrown much focus on the models used to price mortgage backed securities. Many institutions have relied heavily on the credit ratings provided by credit agency. The relationships between management of credit agencies and debt issuers may have resulted in conflict of interest when pricing these securities which has lead to incorrect risk assumptions and val...

In solid-liquid systems, macroscopic solids lose their equilibrium and melt in a manner that results in overall movement of the solid-liquid interface. This phenomenon occurs when they are subjected to temperature gradients or external stress, for example. However, many experiments suggest that the melting of nano- and micro-sized metallic nuclei follows a different process not described by tra...

We measured the effect of the correction of the natural aberrations of the eye by means of adaptive optics on the subject's performance on three different visual tasks: subjective sharpness assessment of natural images, familiar face recognition, and facial expression recognition. Images were presented through a dedicated psychophysical channel and viewed through an electromagnetic deformable m...

This study examined whether recent alcohol-related consequences affect intentions to use protective drinking strategies. Responses were collected from incoming college freshmen (N = 84,367) at 279 U.S. colleges and universities. Plans to limit future drinking were significantly lower among students who were male, younger, White, or were in or intending to join a fraternity or sorority. For heav...
