Aldehydes can react with secondary amines to give α-amino acetals via the α-amination of aliphatic aldehydes catalyzed by iodine. The presence of an asymmetric hydroxylated center at the γ-position of the aldehyde was found to induce the stereoselective amino group. This method represents a stereoselective α-amination of γ-hydroxyaldehydes for the synthesis of syn-γ-hydroxy-α-amino acetals in g...

Strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC) as a conjugation tool has found broad application in material sciences, chemical biology and even in vivo use. However, despite tremendous effort, SPAAC remains fairly slow (0.2-0.5 M(-1) s(-1)) and efforts to increase reaction rates by tailoring of cyclooctyne structure have suffered from a poor trade-off between cyclooctyne reactivity and sta...

Selective oxidation of aliphatic C-H bonds in alkylphenols serves significant roles not only in generation of functionalized intermediates that can be used to synthesize diverse downstream chemical products, but also in biological degradation of these environmentally hazardous compounds. Chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity; controllability; and environmental impact represent the major challen...

A ruthenium-catalyzed asymmetric arylation of aliphatic aldehydes and α-ketoesters with arylboronic acids has been developed, giving chiral alkyl(aryl)methanols and α-hydroxy esters in good yields. The use of a chiral bidentate phosphoramidite ligand (Me-BIPAM) achieved excellent enantioselectivities.

We describe a cobalt-catalyzed hydroacylation of 1,3-dienes with non-chelating aldehydes. Aromatic aldehydes provide 1,4-addition products as the major isomer, while aliphatic aldehydes favor 1,2-hydroacylation products. The kinetic profile supports an oxidative cyclization mechanism involving a cobaltacycle intermediate that undergoes transformation with high regio- and stereoselectivity.

Considerable effort has been directed towards studying the structure and function of nucleic acids and several approaches rely on the attachment of reporter groups or reactive functional groups to nucleic acids. We report here the selective modification of 2-amino groups in oligoribonucleotides, through their reaction with aliphatic isocyanates, to give the corresponding 2'-urea derivatives in ...

In general, hemoproteins are capable of catalyzing redox reactions. Aldoxime dehydratase (OxdA), which is a unique heme-containing enzyme, catalyzes the dehydration of aldoximes to the corresponding nitriles. Its reaction is a rare example of heme directly activating an organic substrate, unlike the utilization of H2O2 or O2 as a mediator of catalysis by other heme-containing enzymes. While it ...
