A single $^{40}$Ca ion is confine in the harmonic potential of a Paul trap and cooled to temperature few mK, with wave packet sub-m spatial sub-m/s velocity uncertainty. Deterministically extracted from trap, propagating over distance 0.27 m detected. By engineering extraction process on initial packet, theoretically modeling trajectories, studying experimentally time-of-flight distribution, we...

This review offers an introduction to the principles and generic applications of FT-ICR mass spectrometry, directed to readers with no prior experience with the technique. We are able to explain the fundamental FT-ICR phenomena from a simplified theoretical treatment of ion behavior in idealized magnetic and electric fields. The effects of trapping voltage, trap size and shape, and other nonide...

We present the design of a type of compact toroidal, or “halo,” ion trap. Such traps may be useful for mass spectrometry, studying small Coulomb cluster rings, quantum-information applications, or other quantum simulations where a ring topology is of interest. We present results from a Monte Carlo optimization of the trap design parameters using finite-element analysis simulations that minimize...

Recent advances in quantum information processing with trapped ions have demonstrated the need for new ion trap architectures capable of holding and manipulating chains of many (>10) ions. Here we present the design and detailed characterization of a new linear trap, microfabricated with scalable complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) techniques, that is well-suited to this challenge. F...

A Penning trap mass spectrometer is a well established instrument for the precise mass determination of both, stable and short-lived nuclides. For this purpose two different concepts are employed. Masses of stable species are mostly determined by the non-destructive detection of image currents induced in the trap electrodes and a subsequent Fourier transformation (FT). For short-lived nuclides ...

The GSI midterm project HITRAP is a planned ion trap facility for capturing and cooling of highly charged ions (HCI) produced at GSI in the heavy-ion complex of the UNILAC-SIS accelerators and the ESR storage ring. In this facility heavy highly-charged ions up to uranium will be available as bare nuclei, hydrogen-like ions or fewelectron systems at low temperatures. The trap for receiving and s...

We report heating rate measurements in a microfabricated goldon-sapphire surface electrode ion trap with a trapping height of approximately 240μm. Using the Doppler recooling method, we characterize the trap heating rates over an extended region of the trap. The noise spectral density of the trap falls in the range of noise spectra reported in ion traps at room temperature. We find that during ...
