The linear response of an isolated, homogeneous granular fluid to small spatial perturbations is studied by methods of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The long wavelength linear hydrodynamic equations are obtained, with formally exact expressions for the susceptibilities and transport coefficients. The latter are given in equivalent Einstein-Helfand and Green-Kubo forms. The context of t...

We have studied purified preparations of murine mammary tumor virus (MuMTV), Rous sarcoma virus (RSV; Prague strain), and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) by laser beat frequency light-scattering spectroscopy, ultra-centrifugation, and electron microscopy. The laser beat frequency light-scattering spectroscopy measurements yield the light-scattering intensity, weighted diffusion coefficients. The c...

A bstract We use the Crooks fluctuation theorem [1, 2] together with Zubarev hydro- dynamics [3] to develop a bottom-up theory of hydrodynamic fluctuations. also thermodynamic uncertainity relations estimate limits dissipative transport coefficients.

We identify “spurious” states in meson-baryon scattering, those that appear in QCD for Nc > 3 but decouple for Nc = 3. The key observation is that the relevant flavor SU(3) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients contain factors of 1−3/Nc. We show that this method works even if SU(3) is badly broken. We also observe that resonant scattering poles lying outside naive quark model multiplets are not necessari...

Pulsed-field-gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) is used to obtain 6 the true hydrodynamic size of complexes of peptides with sodium dodecyl sulfate SDS 7 micelles. The peptide used in this study is a 19-residue antimicrobial peptide, GAD-2. Two 8 smaller dipeptides, alanine-glycine (Ala-Gly) and tyrosine-leucine (Tyr-Leu), are used for 9 comparison. We use PFG-NMR to simultaneously m...

The swimming properties of an E. coli-type model bacterium are investigated by mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations, combining molecular dynamics simulations of the bacterium with the multiparticle particle collision dynamics method for the embedding fluid. The bacterium is composed of a spherocylindrical body with attached helical flagella, built up from discrete particles for an efficient coupl...

In this paper a general hydrodynamic mode coupling theory of equilibrium fluctuations in simple liquids is developed from molecular considerations. The approach developed hem avoids the shortcomings of previous mode coupling theories by adopting a complete hierarchy of equations for the slow modes of a hydrodynamic system and solving it formally through the N ordering approximation scheme devel...

Many features of granular media can be modelled as a fluid of hard spheres with inelastic collisions. Under rapid flow conditions, the macroscopic behavior of grains can be described through hydrodynamic equations. At lowdensity, a fundamental basis for the derivation of the hydrodynamic equations and explicit expressions for the transport coefficients appearing in them is provided by the Boltz...

The aim of this work was to determine the hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient at different interstitial velocities for its application in a mass transport model to predict heavy metal biosorption onto Posidonia oceanica and peat. Tracing experiments with lithium chloride (LiCl) were performed in biosorbent packed beds of 10 and 27 cm length and flow rates between 10 and 100 cm 3 h −1 . Hydrodyn...

We study many-particle diffusion in 2D colloidal suspensions with full hydrodynamic interactions through a novel mesoscopic simulation technique. We focus on the behaviour of the effective scaled tracer and collective-diffusion coefficients DT(rho)/D0 and DC(rho)/D0 respectively, where D0 is the single-particle diffusion coefficient, as a function of the density of the colloids rho. At low Schm...
