Tungsten oxide (WOx) thin film, which is well known as an electrochromic display, was deposited on the ITO film coated flexible substrates using the RF magnetron sputtering method. Phenomena of processing plasmas, the film quality and the electrochromic properties of deposited WO3 thin film have been studied as parameters of a gas pressure and gas mixture. Experimental results suggest that depo...

This work demonstrates the use of thin film heaters to enhance electrothermal pumping in microfluidic systems. Thin film heating electrothermal pumping is more efficient than Joule heating alone. Numerical simulations of an asymmetric electrode array are performed to demonstrate the advantages of incorporating thin film heaters. This specific simulation shows that thin film heater electrotherma...

Abstract—There is a gap at combustor-turbine interface where leakage flow comes out to prevent hot gas ingestion into the gas turbine nozzle platform. The leakage flow protects the nozzle endwall surface from the hot gas coming from combustor exit. For controlling flow’s stream, the gap’s geometry is transformed by changing fillet radius size. During the operation, step configuration is occurre...

Small entrained vapor bubbles can have a significant impact on the evaporation or condensation of a thin liquid film as may be found in the annular flow of refrigerant in a heat exchanger. For example, past work has indicated that unattached small vapor bubbles serve as sites for vaporization within a film that, on average, would be too thin to support nucleate boiling. Vapor entrained in a thi...

In this work, exploratory numerical simulations of liquid–gas flows in horizontal pipes are conducted for three different sets of conditions in the annular and stratified-annular flow regimes. Careful dimensional analysis is used to choose governing parameters in a way that yields flows that are relevant to realistic engineering applications, while remaining computationally tractable. Statistic...

The approach to the critical solution in leading order coating and rimming flow of a thin fluid film on a uniformly rotating horizontal cylinder is investigated. In particular, it is shown that the weight of the leading order “full-film” solution approaches its critical maximum value with logarithmically infinite slope as the volume flux approaches its critical value.

Electroconvection in a thin, sheared fluid film displays a rich sequence of bifurcations between different flow states as the driving voltage is increased. We present a numerical study of an annular film in which a radial potential difference acts on induced surface charges to drive convection. The film is also sheared by independently rotating the inner edge of the annulus. This simulation mod...

A histamine piezoelectric (acoustic) sensor using a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film has been devised and tested. The sensor comprises an electrodeposited MIP film as the recognition element and a 10 MHz AT-cut shear-thickness-mode bulk-acoustic-wave quartz crystal resonator with Pt film electrodes as the signal transducer. Preparation of the sensing film involved two consecutive electr...

Lubrication equations for a surfactant-driven flow of a thin layer of fluid are considered with a singular surfactant-dependent surface tension. It is shown that there exists a bounded traveling wave solution which connects a fully surfactant-coated film to an uncoated film. The regularity of the traveling wave depends on whether or not surface diffusion of the insoluble surfactant is included.

PURPOSE To investigate whether the tear film thinning between blinks is caused by evaporation or by tangential flow of the tear film along the surface of the cornea. Tangential flow was studied by measuring the movement of the lipid layer. METHODS Four video recordings of the lipid layer of the tear film were made from 16 normal subjects, with the subjects keeping their eyes open for up to 30...
