Experimental demonstration of net electro-luminescent cooling in a diode, or equivalently electroluminescence with wall-plug efficiency greater than unity, had eluded direct observation for more than five decades. We review experiments demonstrating light emission from a light-emitting diode in which the electron population is pumped by a combination of electrical work and heat.

We have synthesised and characterised a new low-gap conjugated polymer, with a broad absorption profile. In blends with a C(70) derivative we demonstrate power conversion efficiencies of 0.76%. We show electroluminescence from the polymer peaking at 956 nm, and quantum efficiency of 0.02% in a blend.
Using a twisting linker strategy, stable NUV luminogens are prepared with nearly quantitative luminescence. Nondoped OLEDs fabricated using the dyes as emitters and electroluminescence is achieved maximum EQE of 6.97% small FWHM 48 nm.
We report the fabrication and characterization of light-emitting transistors incorporating individual cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanocrystals. Electrical measurements conducted at low bias voltage and low temperature show clear evidence of Coulomb blockade behavior, indicating that electrons pass through the nanocrystal by single-electron tunneling. Once the bias voltage exceeds the band gap of Cd...
Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) are a promising technology for flat-panel displays and solid-state lighting. While OLED efficiencies have increased dramatically in recent years, further progress is complicated by the fact that the vast majority of organic materials are fluorescent and therefore emit only from molecular excited states ('excitons') with spin 0, or 'singlet' spin symmetry. ...
