A survey is presented of the author's own investigations on the effects of ambient temperature and photoperiod on sleep in corvids. Daily sleep patterns of rook, Corvus frugilegus and magpie, Pica pica have been studied electrographically under natural ambient conditions of light and temperature. The daily amount of total sleep time (TST) was positively correlated with night duration, whereas t...

Hirschi argued that delinquent youth tend to form relatively "cold and brittle" relationships with peers, depicting these youths as deficient in their attachments to others. The current analysis explores connections between delinquency and the character of adolescent romantic ties, drawing primarily on the first wave of the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study, and focusing on 957 teens with d...

The upper and lower sidebands are measured on a traveling wave tube where a cold electron beam is trapped by a large amplitude wave. The two strongly coupled sidebands form a normal mode that is characterized by the sideband growth rates, wave number shifts, amplitude ratio, and phase relationship. The measured values agree only qualitatively with the macroparticle model of Kruer, Dawson, and S...

It is proposed that shock wave dynamics within the gas of a small bubble explain sonoluminescence, the emission of visible radiation. As the bubble radius oscillates, shock waves develop from spherical sound waves created inside the gas bubble. As any such shock propagates toward the center, it strengthens and, upon convergence and subsequent reflection, temperature of gas inside bubble increas...

We propose dissociation of cold diatomic molecules as a source of atom pairs with highly correlated (entangled) positions and momenta, approximating the original quantum state introduced by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) [Phys. Rev. 47, 777 (1935)]. Wave packet teleportation is shown to be achievable by its collision with one of the EPR correlated atoms and manipulation of the other atom i...

The quantum relativistic Buneman instability is investigated theoretically using a collective Klein-Gordon model for the electrons and a cold fluid model for the ions. The growth rate and unstable wave spectrum is investigated in different parameter regimes corresponding to various degrees of relativistic and quantum effects. The results may be important for streaming instabilities involving io...

we usewe use ml shear wave velocity to derive a high resolution 2d ml shear wave velocity map for the iranian plateau. the ml amplitudes and arrival times are routinely measured for the calculation of local magnitude. ml shear wave velocity is very sensitive to the lateral change of crustal thickness and switches between the velocity of lg and sn waves. an lg wave will die out as soon as encoun...

Abstract A muffin-tin structure is chosen to study high gradient acceleration in the millimeter wavelength range. In order to understand the electromagnetic field characteristics, a standing wave structure operating at a frequency around 11.4 GHz was built. Cold test measurements were performed and results are presented. Comparisions with theoretical predictions based on computer simulation are...

Quasiparticle dynamics and energy resolution of STJ single-photon detectors are described. A new readout, the RF-STJ, is presented and its implementation as an mm-wave detector is tested using an on-chip hot–cold source. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. The existence of a unique weak solution to the homogeneous closed Dirichlet problem is proven for an elliptic-hyperbolic equation. The equation arises in a model for electromagnetic wave propagation in cold plasma. A class of open boundary value problems for the equation is shown to possess strong solutions.
