Introduction & Objective: Spontaneous pregnancy loss is the most common complication of pregnancy. However, after a thorough evaluation the potential cause remains unexplained in about half of the cases. Autoimmune disorders appear to play a prominent role among multiple factors implicated in pathogenesis of adverse pregnancy outcome, including thyroid antibodies .The purpose of this study is...
Agranulocytosis is a rare but serious complication of antithyroid drug therapy, and an up-to-date understanding of this topic is important. Both direct toxicity and immune-mediated responses have been described as possible mechanisms. Some major susceptibility loci have recently been identified, which may lead the diagnosis of agranulocytosis into a genomic era. Onset is acute and patients pres...
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a rare pathogen of sepsis in patients with antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis. We herein describe a case of antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis complicated by pneumococcal sepsis and upper airway obstruction. A 27-year-old woman who was previously prescribed methimazole for nine months presented with a four-day history of a sore throat. She nearly choked a...

Three hormones, thyroxine (3,5,3 ,5 -tetraiodothyronine, or T4), triiodothyronine (3,5,3 -triiodothyronine, or T3), and calcitonin (see Chapter 66) are secreted by the thyroid gland. The hormones T4 and T3 are iodinecontaining amino acid derivatives and are unique in that they have no discrete target tissue. Every tissue in the body is affected in some way by thyroid hormones, and almost all ce...
Of 240 pesticides screened for carcinogenicity by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Pesticide Programs, at least 24 (10%) produce thyroid follicular cell tumors in rodents. Thirteen of the thyroid carcinogens also induce liver tumors, mainly in mice, and 9 chemicals produce tumors at other sites. Some mutagenic data are available on all 24 pesticides producing thyroid tumors. M...
Myasthenia gravis and Graves' disease are two autoimmune diseases with a similar mechanism, both having circulating organ autoantibodies and cell specific autoantibodies. It is not unusual for these diseases to occur together. There is a large body of data proving that antithyroid drugs such as methimazole and propylthiouracil have an immunomodulatory effect in addition to their thyrosuppressan...
In 66 untreated patients with hyperthyroidism, serum triiodothyronine (T(3)) and thyroxine (T(4)) concentrations were measured by immunoassay. The mean T(3) level was 478+/-28 ng/100 ml (all values mean+/-SEM) and the T(4) was 20.6+/-0.6 mug/100 ml. The serum T(4)/T(3) ratio by weight was 48+/-2 as opposed to a value of 71+/-3 in euthyroid adults. There was a significant inverse correlation of ...
UNLABELLED Acquired cerebellar ataxia has been described with hypothyroidism, and is typically reversible by thyroid hormone replacement therapy. The cerebellar dysfunction has been attributed to metabolic and physiological effects of the endocrine disorder. In a few patients, however, ataxia has persisted despite thyroid replacement therapy. Other mechanisms may be involved in ataxia associate...
