This paper contains an overview of certain sheath phenomena, namely the criterion for sheath formation, some examples of double layers and a description of some recent experiments on the suspension ofdust particles in a sheath. A detailed review is not attempted and results obtained at Oxford are used to illustrate the last two topics.

Rice sheath blight disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani is one of the most devastating diseases in rice leading to heavy yield losses. Due to the polygenic nature of resistance, no major resistance gene with complete host resistance against R. solani has been reported. In this study, we have performed molecular and functional analysis of the genes associated with the major R. solani-resistance ...

BACKGROUND Many shoulder diseases are related to glenohumeral joint synovitis and effusion. The purpose of the present study is to detect effusion within the biceps long head tendon sheath as the sign of glenohumeral joint synovitis using ultrasonography, and to evaluate the clinical meaning of effusion within the biceps long head tendon sheath. METHODS A consecutive series of 569 patients wh...

Intercropping systems compared to monoculture systems can more efficiently use the existing resources which ultimately will lead to increased plant performance. Therefore, to evaluate the benefits of intercropping maize and beans and assess its impact on yield and yield’s component, an experiment was conducted in factorial design with randomized complete block design in three replication, in 20...

Much effort has been devoted to the synthesis of gold nanoparticles with different shapes, including the zero-dimensional nanospheres, one dimensional nanorods, and two-dimensional nanoplates. Compared to zero or one dimensional nanostructures, the synthesis of two-dimensional nanostructures in high yield has always been more involved, often requiring complex and timeconsuming steps such as mor...

The complications of mechanical lithotripsy include a trapped basket surrounding the stone, fracture of the basket wires or the main operation wire, malfunction of the mechanical lithotriptor crank handle, and ductal injury [1,2]. Impaction of a basket with a captured stone inside occurs occasionally not only during mechanical lithotripsy but also during removal of small stones with non-lithotr...

OBJECTIVE Multi-centre collaborative study to develop and refine the design of a prototype thin perimodiolar cochlear implant electrode array and to assess feasibility for use in human subjects. STUDY DESIGN Multi-centre temporal bone insertion studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS The modiolar research array (MRA) is a thin pre-curved electrode that is held straight for initial insertion with an ...

Background: Vascular access remains a challenge in many patients who require ventricular support using the Impella catheter (Abiomed, Inc., Danvers, MA) for high risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Specifically, limitations of vessel size, calcification and tortuosity may make large bore access difficult. Balloon expandable (BE) sheath technology allows for the insertion of a smaller...

Saltatory impulse conduction in invertebrates is rare and has only been found in a few giant nerve fibres, such as the pairs of medial giant fibres with a compact multilayered myelin sheath found in shrimps (Penaeus chinensis and Penaeus japonicus) and the median giant fibre with a loose multilayered myelin sheath found in the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris. Small regions of these nerve fibres ...

A mathematical model is formulated to catch the dynamics hidden in the plasma-sheath transition layer and the inner sheath layer for planar motion of a plasma. It is shown that the rescaled potential in the plasma-sheath transition layer and inner layer is governed by a perturbed KdV equation, through which some of the complex interactions and couplings among physical mechanisms acting in the p...
