Prophylactic penicillin has been recommended for use in asplenic patients and postsplenectomy patients. A laboratory model using aerosolized pneumococci has been devised to test the effectiveness of prophylactic penicillin in a manner analogous to human experience. There is increased mortality, over time, in asplenic mice exposed to aerosolized type III Streptococcus pneumoniae. One hundred twe...

Three male Caucasian patients with ALS were admitted to the hospital due to progressive dysphagia and dysarthria. During two 21-day courses of penicillin G and hydrocortisone, these patients' dysphagia and dysarthria resolved. The patient's other ALS-associated symptoms also improved, including respiratory function, coordination, walking, and muscle strength. This is the first report of a treat...

A B S T R A C T The ability of antibiotics to prevent Streptococcus sangutis endocarditis was tested in rabbits. Only vancomycin or a combination of penicillin G plus streptomycin always prevented infection when administered as a single dose. A loading dose of 30 mg/kg of phenoxymethyl penicillin (penicillin V) followed by additional 7.5 mg/kg doses for 48 h proved to be the only successful pro...

N-Acetylisopenicillin N was isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces tokunonensis sp. nov., and identified from 1H NMR spectroscopy and release of L-alpha-aminoadipic acid by acid hydrolysis. In the course of this study, the specimen of penicillin N isolated from this strain was proved to contain a small amount of isopenicillin N by HPLC.

Some Escherichia coli strains with impaired cell division form branched cells at high frequencies during certain growth conditions. Here, we show that neither FtsI nor FtsZ activity is required for the development of branches. Buds did not form at specific positions along the cell surface during high-branching conditions. Antibiotics affecting cell wall synthesis had a positive effect on branch...

Synergistic antibacterial effects of mixtures of ampicillin and cloxacillin and induced penicillinases were investigated in 48 strains of Proteus. The serial tube dilution method was used to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration of ampicillin, cloxacillin, and 2:1 and 1:1 mixtures of ampicillin and cloxacillin. Production of penicillinases was determined by the cellulose acetate membra...

Extralabel drug use of penicillin G in food-producing animals may cause an excess of residues in tissue which will have the potential to damage human health. Of all the antibiotics, penicillin G may have the greatest potential for producing allergic responses to the consumer of food animal products. There are, however, no population pharmacokinetic studies of penicillin G for food animals. The ...

patient in group I showed inconclusive results. Four patients (12.2%) in group II had positive tests, including 3 for penicillin G and one for amoxicillin. Conclusions: The results demonstrated that the clinical history collected by medical questionnaires is not the determining factor in confirming a patients’ reaction to penicillin, and shouldn’t be the only parameter used to exclude potential...

The in vitro activity of lysostaphin against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus was determined by conventional tube-dilution methods. For comparison, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were also determined for penicillin G, ampicillin, methicillin, ristocetin, vancomycin, and erythromycin. Phage type and penicillinase and coagulase production were determined for each isolate....
