Pulverized rhizome of Curcuma longa on hydrodistilation, afforded oil in the yield of 1.24% v/w. The oil was investigated by GC and GC/MS. Hydrocarbon monoterpenes (46.9%) constituted bulk of the oil. The major constituents of the oil were, $-bisabolene (13.9%), trans-ocimene (9.8%), myrcene (7.6%), 1,8-cineole (6.9%), "-thujene (6.7%) and thymol (6.4%). Key word: Index: curcuma longa % Zingibe...

Sampling of monoterpenes from air on the Tenax porous polymer may introduce analytical errors owing to oxidation and acid rearrangements on the adsorbent. Particularly terpenes which react rapidly with ozone, e.g. myrcene and limonene, are partially lost when sampling air with high photooxidant levels. On acidified adsorption cartridges, a-pinene and ~-pinene may be converted to camphene, limon...

Recognition of medicinal plants and their biochemical compounds provides fundamental steps for the optimal use of medicinal combinations and their properties. In this study, the antioxidant activity, quantitative and qualitative of essential oil of Artemisia kopetdaghensis and A. sieberi Besser in Razo Jarglan rangelands located in North Khorasan province were investigated. The antioxidant capa...

The aim of this study was to determine the chemical constituents, antimicrobial, cytotoxicity, mutagenic and anti-mutagenic activities of the essential oil of Artemisia ciniformis Krasch. & Popov ex Poljakov, against important bacterial pathogens and human cells which were unknown before. In vitro cytotoxicity was measured using a modified MTT assay on normal human lymphocytes and tumor HeLa ce...

This work combined a micromorphological and phytochemical study approach on Lavandula angustifolia Mill. cultivated at the Ghirardi Botanic Garden (Toscolano Maderno, BS, Italy). The observations leaves flowers revealed occurrence of three trichome morphotypes: peltate, short- medium-stalked capitate. histochemical dyes evidenced huge production terpenes by peltate capitates, while short-stalke...

Essential oils are complex natural mixtures, their main constituents, e.g. terpenes and phenylpropanoids, being responsible for their biological properties. Essential oils from eucalyptus, tea tree and thyme and their major monoterpene compounds alpha-terpinene, gamma-terpinene, alpha-pinene, p-cymene, terpinen-4-ol, alpha-terpineol, thymol, citral and 1,8-cineole were examined for their antivi...

Bark beetles oxidize the defensive monoterpenes of their host trees both to detoxify them and convert them into components of their pheromone system. This oxidation is catalyzed by cytochrome P450 enzymes and occurs in different tissues of the insect, including the gut (i.e., the site where the beetle's pheromones are produced and accumulated) and the antennae (i.e., the olfactory organs used f...
