It has long been surmised that the mean-velocity profile (MVP) of pipe flows is closely related to the spectrum of turbulent energy. Here we perform a spectral analysis to identify the eddies that dominate the production of shear stress via momentum transfer. This analysis allows us to express the MVP as a functional of the spectrum. Each part of the MVP relates to a specific spectral range: th...

Fifty-six patients were diagnosed to have mitral valve prolapse (MVP) syndrome by auscultatory criteria, confirmed by cross-sectional echocardiography. Complete physical examination and x-ray of the bony thorax revealed bony deformities which were subdivided into four main groups according to the predominant deformity. Shallow chest with pectus excavatum, straight back, kyphoscoliosis and ellip...

Background: Mitral valve prolapse is a relatively common valvular abnormality in most communities and joint hypermobility (JHM) is also seen in many healthy people as well as in certain clinical disorders, such as Marfan syndrome. The present study was designed to investigate the association between joint hypermobility and mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in an Iranian population sample. Methods: F...

Severe mitral regurgitation requiring surgery is the most common life-threatening complication of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and is due to progressive myxomatous change in the valve. We identified all residents of New South Wales, Australia, who had mitral valve surgery for myxomatous valve disease during 1982 and, using these data and the adult population statistics from 1982, estimated the c...

BACKGROUND There is an increasing interest in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS Since February 1, 1997 till April 1, 2002, 306 patients underwent endoscopic mitral valve surgery (226 repair, MVP; 80 replacement, MVR). Predominant valve pathology was degenerative in MVP (83.6%) and rheumatic in MVR (65%). Mean age was 61.5+/-12.9 years. Median preoperative functional clas...

Although florid microvascular proliferation (MVP) in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) has long been considered as proliferation of endothelial cells (EC), recent immuno-light microscopic studies demonstrated many alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-sm actin)-positive cells in this MVP, suggesting a major contribution of pericytes and/or vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). Under certain culture condi...

Cancer therapy based on tumor-selective macromolecules may fail due to the elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) that reduces the transvascular and interstitial convection in solid tumors. Modulation of the tumor extracellular matrix (ECM) may reduce IFP and enhance transvascular filtration and interstitial transport of macromolecules. We therefore measured the effect of the ECM-degrading ...

AIMS Deep clefts are a cause of early failure of mitral valve repair, but it is not known whether clefts represent normal morphology, or whether they occur more frequently in mitral valve prolapse (MVP). METHODS AND RESULTS Deep clefts were defined as indentations extending ≥ 50% of the depth of the mitral valve leaflet. Using trans-oesophageal echo (TOE), 3D zoom images were acquired of the ...

Although mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a benign entity overall, there small subset of patients with MVP, particularly bileaflet who may experience life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) secondary to arrhythmogenic MVP syndrome. Studies characterizing this group have been limited by sample sizes and single center design. To assemble worldwide case series examining the clinical phenotype...

In this report, we present 34 patients in whom surgical intervention was undertaken for severe mitral insufficiency due to mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Location and severity of MVP and regurgitation were assessed preoperatively by live/real time three-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography and closely agreed with the surgical findings.
