We present a set of formulae to extract the longitudinal deep inelastic structure function FL from the transverse structure function F2 and its derivative dF2/dlnQ 2 at small x. Our expressions are valid for any value of δ, being x the behavior of the parton densities at low x. Using F2 HERA data we obtain FL in the range 10 −4 ≤ x ≤ 10 at Q = 20 GeV. Some other applications of the formulae are...

Inelastic neutron scattering and nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering were used to measure phonon spectra of FeV as a B2 ordered compound and as a bcc solid solution. The two data sets were combined to give an accurate phonon density of states, and the phonon partial densities of states for V and Fe atoms. Contrary to the behavior of ordering alloys studied to date, the phonons in the B2...

This paper presents a coupled experimental/modeling study of the mechanical response of porcine brain under high strain rate loading conditions. Essentially, the stress wave propagation through the brain tissue is quantified. A Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SPHB) apparatus, using a polycarbonate (viscoelastic) striker bar was employed for inducing compression waves for strain rates ranging from...

We calculate the nonlinear cotunneling conductance through interacting quantum-dot systems in the deep Coulomb blockade regime using a rate equation approach based on the T-matrix formalism, which shows in the concerned regions very good agreement with a generalized master equation approach. Our focus is on inelastic cotunneling in systems with weakly broken degeneracies, such as complex quantu...

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been focused on the development of quantum wire transistors as a means of extending Moore’s law. Here the authors present results of fully three-dimensional, self-consistent quantum mechanical device simulations of InAs trigate nanowire transistor. The effects of inelastic scattering have been included as real-space self-energy terms. They find tha...

This article presents a 3-D multiplicative finite strain model for cold drawing (necking) in engineering thermoplastics. Amorphous as well as semi-crystalline polymers are considered. The notion of intermediate (local) stress-free configuration, that is associated with the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient, is shown to provide an appropriate framework for the modeling and...

Recent experimental determinations of the Nachtmann moments of the inelastic structure function of the proton F p 2 (x,Q 2), obtained at Jefferson Lab, are analyzed for values of the squared four-momentum transfer Q2 ranging from ≈ 0.1 to ≈ 2 (GeV/c)2. It is shown that such inelastic proton data exhibit a new type of scaling behavior and that the resulting scaling function can be interpreted as...

This study investigates the effects of earthquake types, magnitudes, and hysteretic behavior on the peak and residual ductility demands of inelastic single-degree-of-freedom systems and evaluates the effects of major aftershocks on the non-linear structural responses. An extensive dataset of real mainshock–aftershock sequences for Japanese earthquakes is developed. The constructed dataset is la...

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) using metal}insulator}metal (MIM) tunnel junctions is an established technique for studying the vibrational modes of molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces. We are examining a new geometry for IETS in which the oxide layer of the MIM junction is replaced by an atomically thin gas "lm. `Cleana junctions in which the barrier is composed of pure neon ...
