A complete cDNA copy of the fourth RNA segment of the human group B rotavirus adult diarrheal rotavirus (ADRV) has been cloned into lambda phage and excised into plasmid pSK Bluescript. Gene segment 4 contains 2,303 bases and encodes one long open reading frame beginning at base 16 and terminating at base 2263. The encoded protein contains 749 amino acids, with a calculated molecular mass of 84...

Rotavirus group A G12 genotypes were detected in 3 (1.5%) of 198 stool samples positive for human rotavirus. G12P[6] was present in 2 samples, and a mixed G3G12P[8] was found in 1 sample. Phylogenetic analysis of complete open reading frames of all 11 genomic RNA segments proved their Wa-like genogroup affiliation.

Human group B rotavirus was detected in 12 of 220 adult patients and 2 of 67 child patients with severe diarrhea in Bangladesh. Group B rotavirus may be virulent in both adults and children, and the virus may be an especially serious diarrheal agent in Bangladesh.

Analysis of 27 rotavirus strains from vaccinated and unvaccinated children revealed reassortment events in 3 strains: a gene derived from a vaccine; a gene acquired from a circulating strain; and reassortment between circulating strains. Data suggest that the widespread use of this monovalent rotavirus vaccine may introduce vaccine genes into circulating human rotaviruses or vice versa.

We identified a genotype G10P[14] rotavirus strain in 5 children and 1 adult with acute gastroenteritis from the Northern Territory, Australia. Full genome sequence analysis identified an artiodactyl-like (bovine, ovine, and camelid) G10-P[14]-I2-R2-C2-M2-A11-N2-T6-E2-H3 genome constellation. This finding suggests artiodactyl-to-human transmission and strengthens the need to continue rotavirus ...

While only four globally important rotavirus G serotypes (1 to 4) have been documented, many studies suggest that serotype G9 viruses may be widely distributed and more important than previously recognized. We have evaluated 10 serotype G9 rotavirus-neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed to VP7, which bound by direct enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to P1A[8], G9 rotaviruses F45, WI61, and ...

Group C rotaviruses are fastidious in their in vitro cell culture requirements. Recent serosurveys indicate that antibody to group C rotavirus is present in 3-45% of the human population in certain geographic locations, suggesting that rotavirus group C infection is more prevalent than previously believed and that the low rate of detection of these agents is probably due to the lack of sensitiv...

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were developed for the detection of group B rotavirus antigen and antibody. The specificities of both assays were evaluated for antigens and serum specific for rotavirus groups A to D. Serum collected in the United Kingdom from different animal species exhibited the following high prevalence of group B rotavirus-specific antibody: pigs, 97%; cattle, 71%; sheep...

It has been estimated that in Argentina, rotavirus causes approximately 80,000 to 100,000 clinic consultations annually and is responsible for 40% of acute diarrhea related hospital admissions in children under 5 years. In this study, national rotavirus surveillance data from 2009-2011 was consulted to asses prevalence, seasonality, age-group distribution as well as the national and regional ge...
