INTRODUCTION The C677T MTHFR variant has been associated with the same third trimester pregnancy complications as seen in women who have elevations of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP). We hypothesized that these women with third trimester pregnancy complications and MSAFP elevations would have an increased frequency of the variant compared to an abnormal study control group (women with ...

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential as sensing component in the electrochemical field effect transistor and optical sensors, because of their extraordinary one-dimensional electronic structure, thermal conductivity, and tunable and stable near-infrared emission. However, the insolubility of CNTs due to strong van der Waals interactions limits their use in the field of nanotechnol...

The human albumin-alpha-fetoprotein genomic domain contains 13 repetitive DNA elements randomly distributed throughout the symmetrical structures of these genes. These repeated sequences are located at different sites within the two genes. The human albumin gene contains five Alu elements within four of its 14 intervening sequences. Two of these repeats are located in intron 2, and the remainin...

Rates of histone acetylation and deacetylation in nuclei from fetal, adult, and two kinds of neoplastic rat hepatocytes were examined. Histone acetylation in isolated nuclei was measured in the presence of 6 mM sodium n-butyrate, a potent inhibitor of deacetylase, and in the absence of the inhibitor. The deacetylase activity was estimated from the difference between the rates with or without th...

Prenatal karyotyping was undertaken in 569 consecutive amniotic fluid samples where the indication for amniocentesis was two sequential raised maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein concentrations. In 475 successful cultures five chromosome abnormalities were found--four constitutional anomalies (47,XXY; 47,XYY; an inherited inv(8) (p23q11); and a de-novo translocation t(6;7) (p11;p22) and a culture-...

Raised alpha-fetoprotein concentrations were found at 29 and 30 weeks' gestation in the amniotic fluid and maternal serum of a woman who presented in her seventh pregnancy with apparent polyhydramnios. The fetus had multiple abnormalities including gross distension of the bladder resulting from absence of the urethra, intestinal artresia, and a congenital heart defect.

Mutant curly-tail mice are genetically predisposed to produce offspring with neural tube defects. Estimation of alpha-fetoprotein in the amniotic fluid of fetuses of these mutants has shown that the levels are raised in fetuses with exencephaly and open spina bifida. This suggests that these mice are a valid model for studies of the aetiology and genesis of neural tube defects in man.

In article 1600197, Xueyuan Chen and co-workers report a novel luminescent bioassay technique, namely, dissolution-enhanced luminescence bioassay based on inorganic lanthanide nanoprobes, for ultrasensitive in-vitro detection of tumor markers in human sera or saliva, such as carcinoembryonic antigen, prostate specific antigen and alpha-fetoprotein, with detection sensitivities several orders of...

The value of the demonstration of alpha, fetoprotein (a, FP) in the diagnosis of hepatoma is now well established' (O'Connor, Tatarinov, Abeleve, and Uriel, 1970; Purves, Bersohn, and Geddes, 1970). The technique most commonly used for this purpose is bidimensional immunodiffusion which is simple and practical, but may take up to 72 hours and is not very sensitive. The complement-fixation test ...

Paralogy is a pervasive problem in trying to use nuclear gene sequences to infer species phylogenies. One strategy for dealing with this problem is to infer species phylogenies from gene trees using reconciled trees, rather than directly from the sequences themselves. In this approach, the optimal species tree is the tree that requires the fewest gene duplications to be invoked. Because reconci...
