Abstract Commencing from a critical reading of two recent publications on the Mārkaṇḍeyapurāṇa and Devīmāhātmya , this article argues that, contrary to what is maintained by author books under review, ailing Purāṇic studies not reliance traditional modes textual criticism, but misunderstanding about its utility for accessing dynamic history text corpora.
Thematic criticizm shares a new concept inherited from romanticism: literary work is, first of all, the revelation invisible and hidden connections, inspiration. The wtiter’s attitude toward language makes text place invention rather than self-expression. criticism is internal. For those who know how to read, writer’s relationship world, other people, himself entirely contained in writer;s text...
Giovanni Boccaccio’s Teseida delle nozze d’Emilia (1339–1341?) is an innovative vernacular text in which Teseo (Theseus) and the Scythian Amazons are reinvented as antagonists in a war fought to determine how women are meant to live their lives. Boccaccio’s characterization of these figures and their interactions offer an effective counter-narrative to the prevailing ethos that women’s inborn p...
When I talk to graduate students and colleagues about their use of collaborative learning, I often hear stories about when it doesn't work. No one's version of collaborative pedagogy is universally rewarding, of course, but I have found some approaches consistently more successful than others. Thus, we hypothesized that social negativity (expressed anger, hostility, and rejection) would mediate the relationship...
Halvorson (2012) argues that the semantic view of theories leads to absurdities. Glymour (2013) shows how to inoculate the semantic view against Halvorson’s criticisms, namely by making it into a syntactic view of theories. I argue that this modified semantic-syntactic view cannot do the philosophical work that the original “languagefree” semantic view was supposed to do. According to Clark Gly...
Discrepancies (i.e., a subjective sense of falling short of one's own standards) are a key part of the perfectionism construct. Theory suggests discrepancies confer vulnerability to depressive symptoms. Since most research in this area is cross-sectional, longitudinal research is needed to disentangle directionality of relationships and to permit stronger causal inferences. Determining whether ...
Given the rapid development and dissemination of various information types within CMC, source evaluation methodology is increasingly difficult and has been complicated further by dominant academic approaches. We trace the reification of book-based evaluation criteria and how its exalted status has been undergirded by a mentality that reinscribes old patterns of credibility onto wholly new entit...
