Fraud is an ancient crime and one that annually causes hundreds of billions of dollars in losses. We examine the behavioral patterns over time of different types of frauds, which illustrate cyclical frequencies. We develop an evolutionary theory that suggests cyclic behavior in frauds should be common. JEL classifications: D92, L15, P17

PURPOSE The present study investigates whether retinal neovascularization (NV) and apoptosis are altered in MCP-1-deficient ((-/-)) mice in the OIR model. METHODS Postnatal day (P) 7 MCP-1(-/-) and C57BL/6 (B6) mice were exposed to 75% oxygen for 5 days and then recovered in room air. Immunostaining was performed to localize macrophages/microglia within retinal whole mounts and cross-sections...

Detailed knowledge about the rate and mode of the genetic variation is vital for understanding how HIV-1 induces disease and develops resistance as well as for studies on the molecular epidemiology and origin of the virus. To unveil the molecular clock of HIV-1 we analyzed a unique set of viruses from a known transmission history with separation times between samples of up to 25 years. The env ...

Although in decline after successful anti-HIV therapy, B-cell lymphomas are still elevated in HIV-1-seropositive (HIV+) persons, and the mechanisms are obscure. The HIV-1 matrix protein p17 persists in germinal centers long after HIV-1 drug suppression, and some p17 variants (vp17s) activate Akt signaling and promote growth of transformed B cells. Here we show that vp17s derived from four of fi...

PURPOSE To examine the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors during the development of retinal neovascularization (NV) in a mouse model. METHODS A well-characterized murine model of retinal NV was used to study the expression of specific MMPs (MMP-2, MMP-9, and MT1-MMP) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs types 1, 2, and 3). NV of the retina was ind...

HIV-1-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes are important for HIV-1 replication control. F4/AS01 consists of F4 recombinant fusion protein (containing clade B Gag/p24, Pol/RT, Nef and Gag/p17) formulated in AS01 Adjuvant System, and was shown to induce F4-specific polyfunctional CD4+ T-cell responses in humans. While replication-incompetent recombinant HIV-1/SIV antigen-expressing human adenovir...

This work was designed to characterize the HIV viral antibodies in HIV infected and non-HIV infected HBsAg seropositive patients. Fifty non HIV infected (male = 25; female = 25)and 50 HIV infected HBsAg seropositive patients (male – n = 25; female – n = 25) aged 6 – 64 years recruited from the medical outpatient department of Baptist Medical Centre, Saki – Oyo State – Nigeria were investigated ...

PURPOSE The histone-deacetylase inhibitor activity of valproic acid (VPA) was discovered after VPA's adoption as an anticonvulsant. This generated speculation for VPA's potential to increase the expression of neuroprotective genes. Clinical trials for retinitis pigmentosa (RP) are currently active, testing VPA's potential to reduce photoreceptor loss; however, we lack information regarding the ...
