A case of unilateral blindness following blunt injury to the skull is presented. The patient died 4 days after the initial injury, presenting the rare opportunity of a detailed histopathological study of the acute features of the condition. The findings are discussed in the context of current theories of the pathogenesis of optic nerve injury in fractures of the optic canal.

Cranial computed tomographic scans of 225 patients with orbital mass lesions were reviewed. In 11 patients, the optic nerve was seen as a linear defect through the orbital mass. These 11 cases comprised three optic nerve sheath meningiomas, three hemangiomas, two cases of pseudotumor, and one case each of Erdheim-Chester disease, optic neuritis, and metastatic disease. Optic nerve sheath mening...

Previous studies have shown that the secondary degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) occurs commonly in glaucoma. Partial optic nerve transection is considered a useful and reproducible model. Compared with other optic nerve injury models used commonly for assessing secondary degeneration, e.g. complete optic nerve transection and optic nerve crush models, the partial optic nerve transe...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Abnormal signal intensity of the optic nerve due to diffusion restriction may be seen in traumatic optic neuropathy. In addition to evaluating optic nerve hyperintensity on diffusion-weighted imaging, we compared the group differences of ADC values between the injured and uninjured contralateral nerve and identified the relation between measured ADC values and admission v...

Preservation of the optic nerves is an important issue in the resection of tuberculum sellae meningiomas. We report the case of a patient whose optic nerve was penetrated by a tuberculum sellae meningioma. During surgery, a bulging tumor was found to penetrate the right optic nerve. The tumor was gross totally removed, including tumors bulging through the optic nerve. Two trunks of the split op...

BACKGROUND The loss of RGCs expressing Thy-1 after optic nerve injury has an initial phase of rapid decline followed by a longer phase with slower reduction rate. This study used longitudinal retinal imaging of mice expressing cyan fluorescent protein under control of the Thy-1 promoter (Thy1-CFP mice) to determine how the α2-adrenergic agonist brimonidine influences loss of Thy1 promoter activ...

Glaucomatous optic neuropathy is characterized by changes in the intrapapillary and parapapillary region of the optic nerve head, including excavation of the optic nerve head and consequent defects in retinal sensitivity with visual field defects and other psychophysical alterations. Clinical evaluation of the optic nerve head has been shown to have a high specificity and good precision for gla...
