A 65-year-old male with documented atrial flutter who was taking warfarin chronically returned to the anticoagulation clinic for follow-up, after having been on 10 mg daily for approximately 2 weeks. He had a previous sub-therapeutic international normalized ratio of 1.7 on a dose of 65 mg/week. The international normalized ratio at this visit was now 4.77 via venipuncture, after just an 8% inc...

The Questions: (1) Should the patient receive vitamin K and fresh-frozen plasma on evaluation in the emergency department to reverse international normalized ratio? (2) If so, what is the appropriate targeted international normalized ratio level? (3) Should other hemostatic agents such as prothrombin complex concentrates or NovoSeven be used instead of (or in combination with) fresh-frozen plasma?

Familial Searching is the process of searching in a DNA database for relatives of a certain individual. It is well known that in order to evaluate the genetic evidence in favour of a certain given form of relatedness between two individuals, one needs to calculate the appropriate likelihood ratio, which is in this context called a Kinship Index. Suppose that the database contains, for a given t...

Interaction measured on the additive scale has been argued to be better correlated with biologic interaction than when measured on the multiplicative scale. Measures of interaction on the additive scale have been developed using risk ratios. However, in studies that use odds ratios as the sole measure of effect, the calculation of these measures of additive interaction is usually performed by d...

We study the geometric structure of the statistical models for two-by-two contingency tables. One or two odds ratios are fixed and the corresponding models are shown to be a portion of a ruled quadratic surface or a segment. Some pointers to the general case of two-way contingency tables are also given and an application to case-control studies is presented.

In this paper we propose an enhanced maximal ratio combining (MRC) scheme for RAKE receivers in mobile CDMA terminals. It is based on the original MRC scheme derived by Brennan, where the RAKE finger noise powers are used in the combining weights. This enhanced scheme performs nearly as well as Brennan's original MRC scheme, but unlike Brennan’s method, it does not require the estimation of the...

BACKGROUND A case-control study was carried out to investigate the roles of prior allergies and family history of cancers and their interaction in the etiology of adult leukemia. METHODS Prior allergies status and family history of cancers in first-degree relatives were compared between 131 incident leukemia cases and 206 hospital-based controls. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated using an uncon...
