Heat shock protein synthesis can be induced during recovery from cold treatment of Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Survival of larvae after a cold treatment is dramatically improved by a mild heat shock just before the cold shock. The conditions which induce tolerance to cold are similar to those which confer tolerance to heat.

Heat shock prior, during, or immediately after ionizing radiation synergistically increases cell killing, a phenomenon termed hyperthermic radiosensitization. Recently, we have shown a constitutive DNA-binding factor in rodent cells that is inactivated by heat shock to be identical to Ku autoantigen. Ku, consisting of an Mr 70,000 (Ku70) and an Mr 86,000 (Ku80) subunit, is a heterodimeric nucle...

Heat shock or transfection with heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) genes has been shown to protect tumor cell lines against immune mechanisms of cytotoxicity. We have reported previously that heat shock confers resistance to CTL in the rat myeloma cell line Y3 that is Hsp70 defective. Evidence is now presented that Hsp70 is able to prevent the induction of the resistant phenotype. In Con A-stimulate...

Gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) is essential in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and has been implicated in tumor suppression. Recent studies have indicated that GJIC is also involved in cellular stress responses to low dose ionizing radiation, UV light and hydrogen peroxide. However, the contribution of GJIC to the heat stress response has not yet been elucidated. We her...

The small heat shock proteins form a large protein family comprising proteins important in the cellular stress response. Their ability to protect cells against heat shock and their increased expression as part of the heat shock response contributed to their assignment as heat shock proteins. As their molecular mass was usually less than 30, 000 the term ‘small’ was incorporated to distinguish t...

INTRODUCTION We and others demonstrated previously that preconditioning with endotoxin (LPS) protected from a subsequent lethal LPS challenge or from renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). LPS is effective in evoking the heat shock response, an ancient and essential cellular defense mechanism, which plays a role in resistance to, and recovery from diseases. Here, by using the pharmacological ...

Here we further characterize a number of properties inherent to the thermotolerant cell. In the preceding paper, we showed that the acquisition of the thermotolerant state (by a prior induction of the heat-shock proteins) renders cells translationally tolerant to a subsequent severe heat-shock treatment and thereby results in faster kinetics of both the synthesis and subsequent repression of th...

How small heat shock proteins (sHsps) might empower proteostasis networks to control beneficial prions or disassemble pathological amyloid is unknown. Here, we establish that yeast sHsps, Hsp26 and Hsp42, inhibit prionogenesis by the [PSI+] prion protein, Sup35, via distinct and synergistic mechanisms. Hsp42 prevents conformational rearrangements within molten oligomers that enable de novo prio...

OBJECTIVE Hypothermic circulatory arrest has been widely used in complex cardiac and aortic surgery. Stroke and/or neurologic injury can occur after prolonged hypothermic circulatory arrest, possibly due to apoptosis. Ischemic preconditioning has been widely used as a neuroprotective tool, but its application in neuronal injury under hypothermic circulatory arrest has never been studied. METH...

cacl2 treatment followed by heat shock is the most common method for artificial transformation. here, the cells were transformed using cacl2 treatment either with heat shock (standard protocol) or without heat shock (lab protocol) to comprehend the difference in transformation efficiency. the bl21 strain of escherichia coli (e. coli) was being susceptible using cacl2 treatment. some cells were ...
