Ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, and levofloxacin were evaluated for their abilities to prevent mortality in hamsters infected with a lethal inoculum of Leptospira interrogans serovar Portlandvere. Each agent produced a statistically significant survival advantage compared to no treatment and demonstrated survival similar to that seen with doxycycline therapy.
Antibiotics are important agents in dermatologic practice. New drugs have expanded the therapeutic approach to uncomplicated skin infections and complicated infections involving deeper soft tissue or infections that require surgical intervention. This article reviews new antibiotics of dermatologic importance, including daptomycin (cyclic lipopeptide), linezolid (oxazolidinone), quinupristin-da...
Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus isolates were exposed to subinhibitory MICs of ciprofloxacin, sparfloxacin, gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin, clinafloxacin, and gemifloxacin during a 10-day period. Subculturing led to resistance development, regardless of the initial potencies of the quinolones. None of the quinolones was associated with a significantly slo...
In vitro activities of ABT-492, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, trovafloxacin, moxifloxacin, gatifloxacin, and gemifloxacin were compared. ABT-492 was more potent against quinolone-susceptible and -resistant gram-positive organisms, had activity similar to that of ciprofloxacin against certain members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, and had comparable activity against quinolone-susceptible, nonf...
A high resistance rate (47.9%) to gatifloxacin (GAT; 8-methoxy fluoroquinolone) in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strains from 48 Japanese patients is observed after unsuccessful H. pylori eradication. A significant association between MICs for GAT equal to or above 1 microg/ml and mutations of the gyrA gene of H. pylori was demonstrated.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Metallo beta lactamase (MBL) producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been reported to be important cause of nosocomial infections. The appearance of MBL genes and their spread among bacterial pathogens is a matter of concern with regard to the future of antimicrobial therapy. The present study was undertaken to determine the incidence of MBL producing P. aeruginosa in patie...
The in vitro activities of moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, gatifloxacin, imipenem, piperacillin-tazobactam, clindamycin, and metronidazole against 900 surgical isolates were determined using NCCLS testing methods. Moxifloxacin exhibited good to excellent antimicrobial activity against most aerobic (90.8%) and anaerobic (97.1%) microorganisms, suggesting that it may be effective for t...
45 Ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, and levofloxacin were evaluated for their ability to prevent 46 mortality in hamsters infected with a lethal inoculum of Leptospira interrogans serovar 47 Portlandvere. Each agent produced a statistically significant survival advantage when 48 compared to no treatment and demonstrated survival similar to that seen with 49 doxycycline therapy. 50 51 52 53 54 55 56...
Clostridium difficile isolates from a 2004 outbreak in Québec, Canada, were all found to be susceptible to metronidazole, vancomycin, rifampin, and meropenem but resistant to bacitracin, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin, and most (>80%) were resistant to ceftriaxone, clarithromycin, gatifloxacin, and moxifloxacin. The predominant NAP1 isolates were susceptible to clindamycin, while t...
