We describe a case of an occult lateral temporal meningoencephalocele discovered in a 14-year-old boy during a work-up for minor head trauma. This spontaneous encephalocele resulted from a closure defect at the former sphenoidal fontanelle. Preoperative MR images are presented.
A 6 week old girl from a socially isolated family presented with seizures and was found to have a full fontanelle, retinal and subhyaloid haemorrhages, and anaemia. These findings were not the result of a shaking injury but of a ruptured intracerebral arterial aneurysm.
ment of the costochondral junctions and thickening of the wrists and ankles. X-ray shows cupping and widening of the distal ends of long bones. The serum alkaline phosphatase is raised and both calcium and phosphorus are diminished (Back & Cole, 1958; Palmer & Thomas, 1958). Cretinism in which there is stunted growth, delay in closure of the fontanelle, large tongue and umbilical hernia. The se...
Inv dup (15) SIR, With reference to our paper published in the June issue of the journal (1984;21:213-4), we would like to thank you for bringing the paper of Maraschio et all to our attention. These authors described eight new cases of inv dup (15). All were mentally retarded with few or no dysmorphic features and in six cases cytogenetic evidence for the maternal origin of the extra chromosom...
We read with interest the study by Shacham et al.1 Out of 153 children with fever and bulging fontanelle, only one child had bacterial meningitis. However, we disagree with their suggestion of withholding lumbar puncture in this group of children. In their cohort, 41 out of 153 children had aseptic meningitis; however, cerebrospinal fl uid (CSF) viral cultures and PCR studies were only done in ...
A new member of the genus Osteocephalus is described from the Pakaraima mountains of western Guyana. This species is the smallest known member of the genus and is probably closely related to O. subtilis. Both share a small size (less than 40 mm snout-vent length), large and bulgy eyes directed somewhat rostrally, green bones, smooth and brownish dorsal skin, relatively short and truncate snout,...
BACKGROUND Kawasaki disease is an acute, febrile, self-limiting, inflammatory systemic vasculitis seen in early childhood, most commonly in those below 5 years of age. In Kawasaki disease, the coronary arteries are most commonly affected, which may lead to asymptomatic coronary artery ectasia or formation of an aneurysm. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia(PSVT) is a severe and rare cardiov...
OBJECTIVE To clarify clinical features of patients with primary human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection (roseola infantum, exanthem subitum) in a large-scale study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Clinical signs and symptoms were analyzed in 176 infants in whom exanthem subitum was initially suspected and primary HHV-6 infection was later confirmed. The infection was proved by isolation of the virus from ...
Using the anterior fontanelle as an acoustic window, high resolution gray scale sonography brain scans with mobile apparatus were obtained in 35 premature infants. The sonographic technique provided accurate assessment of ventricular size and detected the subependymal germinal matrix and intraventricular hemorrhages. Ventricular size measurements correlated closely with computed tomography (CT)...
